Is Angel Reese already the best rookie in the WNBA this season? What do you think?

Since LSU, Angel Reese has been given several monikers, one of which is the ‘double-double queen’. In the 2023 NCAA season, she set a single-season record with 34 double-doubles. With that, she laid the foundation of her consistent scoring and rebounding ability, which she has capitalized on after being drafted into the WNBA. Fast-forwarding to the present, the incidents of Reese not scoring a double-double have been scarce in the professional league.

Today, we will be engaging in a hearty conversation about her impact on the league, focusing on how she has earned the double-double record under her belt. So, let’s get straight to the point, for Reese has written her name in the WNBA record books.

Within 35 games of her rookie season, Angel Reese has recorded 27 double-doubles. But there is more depth to her season than these two figures as she is in sole possession of the longest double-double streak in the league.

She registered her first double-double in the 5th game of her WNBA season, scoring 11 points and 12 rebounds against Seattle. Then two games later, Reese embarked on her double-double streak journey, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds against New York.

For the next 15 games, she kept making back-to-back double-doubles including the historic matchup with the Storm in early July. Then, she scored her 13th consecutive double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. She surpassed Candace Parker’s record of 12 consecutive double-doubles from the 2009 and 2010 WNBA seasons.

In her 23rd game, the New York Liberty kept the rookie to 8 points, ending the longest double-double streak the league had ever seen in its 27 years of history. But it did not budge the Baltimore native. In the next game against the Las Vegas Aces, she kicked off another double-double streak. However, it wasn’t that effective as it continued through 7 games only. Still, she put out impressive figures then, collecting 20 or more rebounds in three games.

Have an interesting take?

Interestingly, there were only 10 games in which Angel Reese had scored a double-double and the Sky grabbed a victory over the opponents. Simply put, the Sky saw more losses than wins while her double-doubles were making all the buzz, which was mostly going southwards.

But the truth of the matter was that she held up her end of the bargain of maintaining her stats on the elite level while her team was catching up to the pace of the season. So, what’s the takeaway?

What is there in store for Reese in the future?

Before she got sidelined with the season-ending injury, Reese maintained her double-double prowess in the last 4 games. The best one unleashed in her recent game against the Sparks where she put out 24 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Sky to a 92-78 victory and eliminating LA from the playoff contention.

Looking at Angel Reese’s record-setting performances, it is safe to say that she was the second-best rookie in terms of productivity as compared to everyone in the class of generational talent. Hadn’t it been for her injury, she would most likely have won All-Rookie honors.

She concluded her inaugural season putting out a double-double average of 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. Talking about what could her future be, if she continues her elite rebounding in the long run, then she will be on her path to leading the league in all-time rebounding by her 8th WNBA season. Although, her rookie season has been cut short, her future looks brighter than the sun.
