Is Kiana Williams the weak link in the Seattle Storm's lineup? What's your take?

When Kiana Williams had signed a 7-day contract with the Seattle Storm on July 5, she wasn’t aware of what lay ahead for her. During the 2024 WNBA season, Williams had inked a deal with the Storm a second time and was vying for a place in the final team for their regular season games. Unfortunately, just hours before the Storm’s clash against the Indiana Fever on Sunday, Williams had to face major trouble that crushed her dreams of representing the Storm.

As per a tweet by Underdog WNBA, Williams has been waived by the Storm for the second time this season. And Williams fans were disappointed after getting to know that their star wasn’t in contention for the lineup against Caitlin Clark’s Fever.

“Transaction alert: Kiana Williams released by the Storm, per WNBA Transactions page,” tweeted Underdog WNBA, citing the WNBA Transactions page as a source. Since Williams had been drafted by the Seattle Storm during the 2021 WNBA draft in the second round, she had to face a lot of ups and downs. Though the 25-year-old played 10 games for the Storm during the 2021 season, she was never a favorite. Almost two and a half months after the draft in June, Williams was released by the Storm, leaving her disheartened.

Next, she tried to find a place on the Phoenix Mercury roster when she attended the training camp from March 2022 onwards. However, her time with the Mercury was limited as she wasn’t chosen to be on the roster and was instead released at the end of the training camp. In 2022, Williams again made it to the Storm’s roster where she took to the floor in 3 games before being waived off again.

In July 2022, destiny seemed to take a turn for her when the Connecticut Sun signed her on a 7-day contract. She also got a chance to play one game that season, but her hardships didn’t end as she didn’t appear in any game after that. In terms of numbers, the 2024 season was her best as the Storm backed her once again and she got to represent Seattle in 13 games.

But on July 2 she was waived by the Storm only to be re-signed 3 days later for a 7-day contract. And now, as per the latest news, she has once again been let go. This came just hours before the clash against the Indiana Fever.

Seattle Storm to clash against Indiana Fever

Since May, the Storm has clashed against the Indiana Fever thrice, winning each time. While in the first game, the Storm won 85-83, in the next game, Seattle defeated the Fever on their home court by a 103-88 margin. Post that, in June, the Storm again squared off against a revengeful Indiana, only to dominate them once again with an 89-77 margin. Therefore, this last regular season game between the two could either earn the Fever redemption or get the Storm complete authority.

The game is, therefore, going to be interesting with a recharged Caitlin Clark, expected to avenge her defeats against the Storm on Sunday. But still, the game could swing to either side, considering Jewell Loyd had stunned Clark with her three-point barrage last time.

The main point after waiving off Williams is whether her absence will impact the Storm. Though Williams was never a mainstay, her backcourt duties have helped Seattle at times. Who do you think will win the game? Mention in the comments below.
