At the press conference, when asked for advice for developing women’s basketball in countries like the Philippines, Sue Bird shared a very insightful response. Bird emphasized that viewing sports as a tool for education and personal development could revolutionize the way resources are allocated, especially for girls who often have fewer opportunities. She highlighted the need for equal opportunities and resources in sports for both genders.
She said, “I think it would change where they put their resources. Where they’re able to maybe build a budget to put the importance on sports. Especially for little girls, because they’re probably the ones that are gonna receive even less of the opportunity compared to little boys.”
She further added, “I wish people would view it more as a tool, a tool for education, a tool to better themselves. And through that, hopefully, you can bring in people from countries that have already developed things for knowledge. Because that what’s it is, I feel like in women’s sports a lot of times, there’s just that gap that exists because things around women’s sports are different than men’s, not worse, not better, just different.”
