Carmelo Anthony's support for Gabby Williams—Is this the kind of sportsmanship we need more of?

While Team USA won gold in Paris, French star Gabby Williams won hearts. She came as a surprise package in this Olympics and stunned everyone by tapping into her potential, scoring 19 points in the Finals. Since then, she has been the talk of the town with prominent stars such as Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, and Napheesa Collier among others applauding her. But, that was just the beginning as recently she was praised by the ex-NBA star, Carmelo Anthony.

Recently, Anthony discussed Team USA and its competitors in Paris. And, how he or anyone else could’ve forgotten Williams? “We are seeing a development. France in women’s are very, very good. Like, Gabby is really, really good. Like, she is really, really good. Like that team, the way that they got, they got a hell of a coach. Whoever’s that guy. He is a hell of a coach. Like what he’s doing there with the women’s side,” Anthony stated, via 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony & The Kid Mero.

Williams, as mentioned before, scored an exceptional 19 points and 7 rebounds during the Finals bringing back France time and again into the game. But, it wasn’t just a one time wonder. Instead, Williams averaged a decent 15.5 points with 4.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game at the Olympics. Therefore, she earned her fair share of credit for her exceptional performances. But, she wasn’t alone. Even the French coach Jean-Aimé Toupane is being congratulated for getting the Les Bleues into the Olympic Finals for the first time since 2012.

Taking over the reins as the coach for the French women’s national team in October 2021, Toupane has provided the impetus for France to win a bronze at the EuroBasket 2023, and as we all know, he consolidated a good team that won a silver in the latest Olympics. Previously, he was the coach for the French men’s U20 national team from 2009 to 2021. Hence, when the French showed a brilliant performance, Stewie too came forward to laud Williams.

Breanna Stewart praises Gabby Williams

Just hours ago on Thursday, Williams posted a picture of herself in the arena donning the French colors. She captioned it “merci bercy,” and earned a lot of applause from her fans. Stewart too instantly hit the keypad to thank Williams for her display. “Love you so much I hate you.” Plus, the Nevada-born was also celebrated by Stewie’s Unrivaled co-partner Collier who commented three hearts on the post.

This had fans speculating if Williams was being approached to join Unrivaled which is the first player-owned women’s 3*3 league and will commence from January next year. Although there has been no communication on the issue from either Stewart or Williams, if the 27-year-old joins the event, it will be a win-win for both nations.
