The San Antonio Spurs secured a resounding 117-103 triumph over the Houston Rockets. But rather than reveling in this achievement, Head Coach Gregg Popovich opted to highlight the recent victory of his assistant coach, Becky Hammon, and her team, the Aces. Popovich contemplated getting ejected from his preseason game against the Rockets to witness Hammon secure her second WNBA championship.
Prior to joining the Aces, Hammon served as Popovich’s assistant coach with the Spurs. The Aces were in Brooklyn for Game 4 of the WNBA Finals against the New York Liberty on Wednesday night, while the Spurs were at home for a preseason game.

Gregg was racing to celebrate the Spurs’ victory while pushing the media to a fast question. Instead of talking about the Spurs, the reporters asked Gregg about Becky’s triumph, to which he replied, “I gotta go celebrate. Becky Hammon and the Aces, it’s like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. It’s Becky and the Aces. Fantastic.” He chuckled and added, “I thought about getting booted tonight because it was exactly the same time.”
The five-time NBA champion quipped that the Spurs are his priority and that he was overjoyed that the Aces made the Finals. “But I just thought this had to be my priority. But it was close. It was close. Congrats, Becky. Yeah, baby. Good stuff.” He was in a celebratory mood when he told reporters, “I gotta go get some wine. Can I say that?”
