Angel Reese is living beyond her means. She confessed it herself on her Instagram Live this month. “I just hope y’all know the WNBA doesn’t pay my bills at all. I don’t even think it pays one of my bills, literally,” she stated while opening up about how her rent was $8,000 a month, which adds up to $96,000 yearly. That is much higher than her rookie salary of $73,439 with Chicago Sky. How does she afford her lifestyle?
As revealed by Reese, her endorsement deals and social media presence earn her a lot more money. In fact, the WNBA star is also set to join ‘Unrivaled’—a new 3-on-3 women’s league in January. The salary is expected to be $250,000 for an eight-week season. It is clear that Reese has multiple sources of income, but the question is: Was she right in discussing her WNBA salary so openly?
On Sunday’s episode of ‘Come And Talk 2 Me’, Kianna Nycole joined hands with Treasure Wilson to discuss Reese’s comments. What did they say?

“I think I understand what Angel was trying to do, you know. She was trying to explain how for as much clout that she has and how good of a player that she is, the league is not sponsoring her lifestyle and one would think like, especially comparing to her male counterparts that she would be able to, you know, comfortably live a certain type of way… I see the vision. I see what she is trying to do: Bring awareness, shed light. The execution, I think, kinda distracted from the message. I think it lacked taste. I think it was a little bit too transparent,” Nycole stated.
Here’s the thing. The pay disparity between the WNBA and the NBA has been discussed extensively. For instance, Caitlin Clark, the first overall WNBA draft pick, made about $76,535 in her first year and is expected to earn $338,056 over her first four years. On the other hand, Victor Wembanyama, the first overall 2023 NBA draft pick, signed a four-year, $55.7 million rookie contract to play for the Spurs.
Of course, there will be a difference between the WNBA and the NBA because the popularity and revenue generated are much different. But with the WNBA gaining a lot more popularity in recent times, people expect to see a change in the salary players make. But getting back to the discussion on Reese:

“It was just very… you know just nonchalant, off the cuff. Like ‘Oh, yeah! I’m living beyond my means.’ Like it’s cute. It’s fun. And so it’s just like… I don’t know… it just left me confused. I feel like confidentiality would have been the best option here. We didn’t need all that, especially if it doesn’t seem like you’re necessarily bothered right by it. I just think she could have used her platform in a better way if she wanted to convey some sort of message,” Nycole stated, via Come And Talk 2 Me, hinting that the WNBA player could have been more respectful.

Wilson agreed with Nycole and further also stated that WNBA players deserved higher salaries.
“They are worth more than that but I just think to say because what really got me even aside from the rent was saying, ‘I don’t even know my salary. 74,000?’ Like there are some girls making less than you who are like, ‘Dang, like what you mean? Like only 74,000?'”Now, Nycole and Wilson weren’t the only ones who were left a bit on edge with Reese’s comments.
Barbara Corcoran’s comments on Angel Reese’s rant!
Barbara Corcoran recently gave an interview to TMZ Sportz where she subtly stated that Reese’s issues didn’t amount to much. For the unversed, Corcoran had founded the Real estate company The Corcoran Group, which operated in New York. And one of the marketing plans of the $100 million celebrity was mailing the prospective clients the average price of an apartment in NY. Hence, going by her experience, she stated:
“$8,000 a month in Chicago, she’s lucky she gets a kitchen for it… Thank God she’s not moving to New York. Here, she’d pay $12,000 for the same apartment. So, it could be worse,” Corcoran revealed while expressing that “paying $8,000 a month in the Windy City ain’t too shabby!!”
So while Reese’s problems did strike a chord with her fans, they failed to do so with trained analysts and celebs. However, her openness has once again sparked the debate about low WNBA salaries. With more lucrative opportunities like ‘Unrivaled’ and the overseas leagues existing, the WNBA might have to make some changes if they want to keep their biggest talents.
Additionally, the league isn’t the top choice for international players. “It’s not worth their time, cause they won’t get paid as much as they make here,” said Connecticut Sun center Brionna Jones last year. She has spent the past four WNBA offseasons playing with Praha.
