Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink are doing fine. But it’s the expectations somewhere that are bringing them down. Previously too, several experienced athletes had made it clear that NCAA star children will find it difficult to dominate from the word go in the WNBA, only to be hated for their statements. And now their gameplay is just a testament to the same. Recently, while addressing this rookie class UConn women’s head coach Geno Auriemma shed light on the difficult times of these rookies in WNBA.
Geno Auriemma made an appearance in an interview and blamed their fans and the social media which has been a hounding ground for the trio of Clark, Reese, and Brink. He also questioned the ethics of fans who were taking a game too seriously and in turn disturbing the mental peace of their loved players.“This rookie class isn’t one of the best rookie classes in the last 10 years. But, they’ve been put out to be that because of where social media is today. So what kind of impact is this rookie class having in the WNBA,” Auriemma stated via ‘Dan Patrick Show’.
“But these ridiculous fans who had her slotted as the next Diana, bam. Are you out of your mind? And these fans who were waiting out of the bus for the Chicago Sky team, what the hell is wrong with you? What do you become of? A third world soccer country. Like when a soccer player gives up his own ball and we’re waiting in the bar to shoot him? Like what the hell are we doing here,” Auriemma continued.

“The delusional fanbase that follows her disrespected the #WNBA players by saying she’s going to go in that league and tear it a part… The kid was set up for failure right from the beginning.”

The three of them were labeled as the best players to come out of college basketball. The women’s NCAA Championship Finale had an average viewership of 18.7 million views whereas the men’s basketball Finale had around 14.8 million views. Therefore, these players brought women’s basketball to the forefront but with it came the expectations. And when those weren’t fulfilled since the women were still adjusting to the WNBA, the fans started their outbursts on social media platforms. Auriemma even had advice on Clark’s future.

The 70-year-old didn’t shy away from stating the truth in Clark’s case. He was quick to opine that Clark was suffering due to the physicality of the league, something that Clark was also concerned about. Another point he made was that Clark needs to have a better team. Notably, Clark is finding it difficult to have players assist her the way she had second fiddles in the NCAA during her years.
“She’s just not built for the physicality of this league and she’s not quick enough to get away from the physicality, so there’s a lot of learning curve, like Diana. And when she gets it, she has elite skills that are really going to help her. She needs to be on a better team and she needs experience. And that will come,” Auriemma remarked as per Indy Star.

Now that Auriemma has said it, fans will understand the pressure they are mounting on their favorite stars and hopefully, Clark, Reese, and Brink will be able to perform exceptionally even in the WNBA.
