The two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion Brittney Griner has become a household name among the fans. Griner played in the league for over a decade. Brittney Griner, the WNBA champion and 8x All-Star, was arrested in Russia in February and detained in the country. Griner usually plays in overseas leagues during the WNBA off-season; this time, she was to play in a Russian League. When she landed in Moscow on February 17, 2022, she was detained by airport officials for carrying less than a gram of hash oil.

Griner claims that the cannabis aid was prescribed to her for pain alleviation in Arizona, where consumption and use of cannabis are legal for medicinal purposes. But in Russia, it is classified as a drug and is illegal. Due to this, Griner was arrested and on August 4, 2022, she would be sentenced to 9 years for the possession and smuggling of drugs.
