Why does Caitlin Clark get more love than Angel Reese for the same achievements? Double standards much?

Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark may be star rookies but they’ve rarely shone on court with the same kind of achievements. While CC is the ‘Logo-3 queen’, Reese gets rebounds like nobody’s business. She also has a historic 15 consecutive double-doubles in games, while Clark is the only rookie to have two triple-doubles. And yet, this dynamic rivalry has found a common ground off the court.

It doesn’t have to do with basketball directly, or even brands and deals, but rather gracing sports magazine covers. And Clark’s former Iowa head coach Jan Jensen couldn’t be more proud. “👀Love to see it! Keep rollin’ in the playoffs @CaitlinClark22” she wrote on X as the Fever rookie made a magazine cover for the second time in 6 months, playing in two different leagues both times.

A few days ago, Sports Illustrated released a power list of the 50 most influential athletes. While both Reese and Clark were bound to make the list, the Chicago rookie also made the cover while Clark did not. But SLAM magazine has put her likeness in their latest edition today.

Jensen continued in her X post, “We’re with you all the way in your “second” SLAM cover era…just like we were in your “first” SLAM cover era!👊🏼😀” The Hawkeyes coach will be leading Iowa in their first season post-Caitlin Clark, but the coach has always been proud of her former mentee.

Angel Reese had drawn some flak from fans when SI announced that she would be on their cover. As far as stats are concerned, both Reese and Clark have blown the numbers out of proportion. It has been a W season unlike any other, and yet, it’s Clark who’s the number one choice for Rookie of the Year. Not only did SI place Reese several places above the Indiana player, but her cover appearance irked CC fans to no end.

Reese also appeared on a SLAM cover in May, but that remains her sole appearance. Nevertheless, while Caitlin Clark may be the ROTY this year, it’s also undeniable that Angel Reese is one of the few players earning more off the court than on it this year. And her latest partnership with General Mills points to the same.

Even with Nike and Wilson backing Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese picks up in the endorsement game

From her LSU days, Angel Reese has been a leading NIL entity, and she has continued the trend in the W. From Goldman Sachs and Airbnb to Playstation and Amazon, the Sky player has redefined the endorsement game. And she has another feather to add to her cap.

“Angel X Reese’s Puffs” cereal boxes are coming to shelves in October end, and if there is one name any famous American wants to associate themselves with, it’s General Mills. “I’m so excited to partner with such an iconic brand. Not only does this fulfill my childhood dream of being on a cereal box, but there couldn’t be a better fit for me to join forces with than REESE’S PUFFS cereal,” Reese said in a statement.

Now Caitlin Clark also has the backing of big names like Nike, Bose, and Gatorade. In fact, for the first time since Michael Jordan, sporting goods brand Wilson has also joined hands with the Fever guard and will release a collection of items featuring Clark, including limited edition basketballs. Two batches have already sold out within minutes.

And yet, as Sarah Zipp, director of sports management at Mount St. Mary’s University posits, it’s Angel Reese who is earning millions off the court, more than most WNBA players. While Caitlin Clark has pulled ahead in the ROTY race and still has a net worth of $5m, her one true nemesis is not that far away in this one respect at least with a net worth of $3m.
