Can the Fever bounce back without Erica Wheeler, or is their season already doomed?

Having claimed their playoff spot after 8 years, the Indiana Fever is facing some tumbles. After taking a 93-69 defeat in Game 1, they are back to face Connecticut in the First Round of Game 2. Kickstarting, Caitlin Clark made the first bucket of the game from the perimeter, with Kelsey Mitchell adding the following 2 points. However, it had only been the second quarter when they received their first casualty for the night.

The intense matchup took a concerned turn when Erica Wheeler launched herself onto the courtside photographers in an attempt to score a buzzer-beater. She was down on the floor for several minutes, leaving everyone concerned. However, she then got up and walked towards the locker room without any help, while holding onto one of her arms/elbows.

Fortunately, she was then cleared to return after a quick evaluation, however, she stayed off the floor for the rest of the game. As a result, Lexie Hull entered in her stead for the 3rd quarter.

Wheeler entered the game in the second quarter and could score only 2 points in free throws and an assist before crashing into the sidelines at the end of the first half. It was the third quarter when things got interesting.

Coming up seven points short, the Fever made up for that by scoring the initial 7 points in the third and tied the game. However, the Fever had a shortlived moment when Lexie Hull made a layup, giving Indiana a 48-47 lead. But Alyssa Thomas would restore it in Connecticut’s favor, scoring a 16-foot 2-point jumper. Clark would only snatch it back in the 4th quarter with a 3-point shot. Indiana took a 71-70 lead with almost 4 minutes left in the game until DeWanna Bonner responded with a shot from the perimeter.

In comparison to her postseason debut, Caitlin Clark finished the game with 25 points and 9 assists. Aliyah Boston also came in large with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while team’s leading scorer, Mitchell finished with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

However, this wasn’t enough as the Sun took over the game and eliminated Indiana from their first playoff run after almost a decade. Star of the game, Alyssa Thomas scored a double-double with 19 points and 13 assists to help Connecticut to an 87-81 win and to the semi-finals. “We pulled out a gutsy win. We’re hungry and ready. … We’re ready for what the playoff journey is going to unfold,” she said as per ESPN.
