Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell: Are they the best shooting duo the WNBA has ever seen?

Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark is emerging as a phenom on the court each day. A franchise record one day, a league another, and then a rookie along the way. “Caitlin’s a fierce competitor, and that’s what sets her apart,” Sides had acknowledged. But it isn’t just Clark who is responsible for creating a legacy for the Fever like never before.

Fever’s veteran, Kelsey Mitchell, is right there with her. Even when the rookie may not be at her best, Mitchell ensures to leave an indelible mark. During a loss to the Aces on September 12th, Mitchell stepped up by contributing 24 points to the team’s total. Clark, on the other hand, delivered 16 points and six assists. While she fell five assists short of breaking the record, she did shatter another one—becoming the first pair of teammates in WNBA history to hit 100+ 3PM in the same season.

While Clark went 1-for-10, her standout teammate recorded 4-for-7 on three-pointers in the game. The showdown against the Aces turned out to be a reflection of their three-point shooting accuracy throughout the season. Moving forward with momentum, Clark has raised the bar by hitting 112 three-point shots alone in her rookie season. Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell, wearing #0, followed closely behind with 100 shots, marking the first time in six WNBA seasons this has happened.

However, the Indiana Fever rookie isn’t fully satisfied with her gameplay yet.

Caitlin Clark to watch her steps

Have an interesting take?

While Clark has been excelling in every other area, there’s one she needs to tread carefully. The rookie’s fouls have put her and the team in trouble and HC Christie Sides needs her crucial player to be mindful. “We’re definitely going to have a conversation… We can’t afford to have her sitting out because of avoidable fouls,” Sides said after Clark had recorded her fifth technical foul in the post-Olympic break game against Seattle Storm. This places the rookie just two more away from automatic suspension.

However, Clark revealed she was issued one because she got mad at her game and hit a board and the officials took it as a disrespect to the game. So, aware of the reasons, the Fever rookie just needs to watch her fierceness to stay off technicals and her ‘quickness’ to keep off offensive fouls when she faces the LV Aces next.

“The offensive fouls are definitely surprising at times. I feel like I do get held and get quite a bit of contact throughout the game... it is what it is… I can use my quickness a little bit better,” she added in the press conference after the game against the Aces when asked about the rather disagreeable offensive foul she got called for.

The Fever take on the Aces once again Friday night and hopefully the rookie channels her fierceness towards the game like she did the last time.
