Simone Biles' comeback—Is she the greatest gymnast of all time, or is there someone better?

It took Biles three days to wash away the painful memories of Tokyo 2021. After leading the US women’s gymnastics team to gold on July 30, the world’s most decorated gymnast completed her redemption arc by claiming the individual all-around gold medal for the second time on August 1 and adding her name to a unique list. Not only that, she had the US women’s basketball community gushing over her yet again.

At first, it appeared that her rival Rebeca Andrade would snatch Biles’s shot at immortality. Biles was third after the second rotation following a flawed performance on the uneven bars. She was behind Andrade by 0.267 and trailed Kaylia Nemour by 0.067 points. But Biles was not to be denied.

She delivered a swift performance on the 4-inch-wide beam and as Andrade fumbled, Biles headed into the final routine on the floor in the top spot. A stunning routine gave her a total of 59.131 points and with it her sixth gold medal. In the process, she became the first woman to win two Olympic all-around titles since Czechoslovak gymnast Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968 and just the third overall, with Larisa Latynina being the other name on this illustrious list.

Speaking after her win, Biles said, “Personally, tonight, it means the world to me.” Indeed, it should. Three years ago in Tokyo, a case of “twisties” left her in doubt about her gymnastics career she thought she would “never step foot on a gymnastics floor.” But in Paris, Biles reigned as the comeback queen.

Biles also reserved praise for her rival Andrade and said, “I don’t want to compete with Rebeca no more. I’m tired. She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out the best athlete in myself.” It was the presence of Andrade that forced Biles to bring out the “Biles II”, the Yurchenko double pike vault in the first rotation and handed her an eight-10th difficulty score advantage.

After Biles’ crowning glory, WNBA star Angel Reese expressed her delight in a tweet with a nod to the women’s gymnastics team’s nickname. She was joined by other women’s basketball stars as they celebrated Biles’s historic achievement.

Have an interesting take?

After Team USA’s win on Tuesday, the women’s basketball community had come together to acknowledge their success. On that occasion, the likes of Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson, 4x Olympic gold medalist in basketball, Lisa Leslie joined in the celebrations. The scenes were repeated once again following the individual all-around event.

Reese took to X to congratulate Biles for her formidable performance. She tweeted, “SIMONE SAID F AROUND AND FIND OUT! OKAY SISTAAAAA🥳🤭👸🏽👑.” Reese was notably referring to the US Gymnastics team’s nickname, whose abbreviation Biles had revealed after her gold win on Tuesday night. Biles said the team’s was F.A.A.F.O, an abbreviation for “F**k around and find out.” However, she later revealed in a tweet that the official team name is “Golden Girls” because they’re the oldest US women’s team since 1952.

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley had also tweeted in favor of “GOAT” Biles. Tweeting “BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA GOAT SIGHTING!!! @Simone_Biles #ParisOlympics2024,” Staley referred to the fact that Biles won her sixth Olympic gold and 9th overall. She also has 30 World Championship medals, making her the most decorated gymnast in history. Thus, the GOAT shouts. And Staley wasn’t the only one with this feeling.

UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers had also stated, “My goats!” pointing out to Biles and her teammate Suni Lee. Biles was up against her USA teammate Lee in the all-around competition. Lee bagged a bronze medal which would feel special for the 21-year-old overcoming two kidney diseases in the last year.

Biles finished with a combined score of 59.131, while Andrade had 57.932 and Lee had 56.465. This success followed the team gold on Tuesday when Biles and Lee along with their compatriots, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles, scored an incredible 171.296.

They became the fourth US women’s team to win the Olympic team title and each one had a nickname: The Magnificent Seven (Atlanta 1996), Fierce Five (London 2012), and Final Five (Rio 2016). After their win many

Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington also came forward to extend her wishes by enumerating that “Floor looks so effortless for Simone omgggg🤩.” Biles scored an effortless 15.066 in the Floor event for a combined score of 59.131, taking home the first prize. Throughout her difficult routine, she had a smile on her face, which proved to everyone that it wasn’t difficult at all for Biles.

With so many celebrities cheering for Biles, it surely would have been a proud moment for her. As for Reese, Bueckers, Staley, and Carrington, hopefully, fans will be able to catch them as spectators in the Paris Olympics. And perhaps, they too will keep their followers updated on their moves through social media.
