Even after Olympic defeat, A'ja Wilson's million-dollar deal keeps her on top. Thoughts?

When the Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson won the WNBA Championship last season, it was a bittersweet moment for her. Sweet since it was the second consecutive time that she would lift the trophy and bitter because she couldn’t get her hands at the MVP trophy that season something she even expressed during the victory parade. But this year, Wilson has focused her energies on a shoe deal that is going to bring her happy days even if she fails to perform exceptionally well at the Olympics or for some reason doesn’t lift the MVP trophy.

B.Terell was present in a chat with Gigi Speer on Locked On Women’s Basketball on Wednesday when he spoke at length about Wilson’s shoe deal and how it has come at the right moment for her. Fans were excited to know what lay ahead for Wilson.

Terell was asked about Team USA defeating Team Germany in the exhibition game in London on Tuesday when he put the spotlight on Wilson and opined how the circumstances supported Wilson.

“A’ja is doing A’ja things. The MVP caliber season that she’s been having in the W she’s taking that right on to the international stage, and I’m glad because I think that this is going to be great for her because more people are able to see her… her game on a global stage. And that’s only setting up for the success of her shoe when it drops. You’re playing in all… in front of all these international fans. They’re gonna have the name A’ja Wilson on their lips and when that shoe drops they’re gonna be like ‘I need me… some A’Ones.’ So… It’s all right on. It’s all right on time,” Terell stated.

Have an interesting take?

Wilson on Tuesday helped her team defeat the Germans by an 84-57 margin, She led the tally with 19 points and 14 rebounds which instantly got her a lot of international fans. Plus in the WNBA, she has been dominating with her performances as she averages 27.2 points per game with 11.9 rebounds per game. Hence, many opine that the 27-year-old might end up winning the MVP award this year. Her international performances coupled with her form in the W is certainly going to help boost her shoe sales.

Wilson announced her shoe deal with the famous sneaker brand Nike in May this year. The sneaker named A’One will hit the shelves in 2025. Wilson has worked closely with the shoe company to craft pairs that suit her game style and have her logo. There were murmurs about Wilson’s shoes in the market since 2023 and when they materialized in 2024, her fans had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate. Meanwhile, Wilson is not the only one who has a shoe deal with Nike.

Sabrina Ionescu had signed a shoe deal with Nike much before A’ja Wilson

The New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu can also increase her shoe sales by performing well at the international level. After getting drafted in 2020 by the New York Liberty, Ionescu signed a multi-year deal with Nike that included her signature shoes. The deal which is reported to be worth $24 million has got Ionescu two signature shoes – the Sabrina 1s that were released in 2023 and the Sabrina 2s that hit the shelves earlier this year.

Hence, she too can boost the sales of her shoes by performing well in the Olympics. However, whether she will be in the starting 5 or not is something yet to be determined as there is a lot of competition within Team USA.
