“I love it when WNBA players are covered by our company,” exclaimed Sue Bird, the WNBA legend who hanged her jersey back in 2022 after an incredible 19 season-long career. The idea for Togethxr was first sparked by USWNT retired star Alex Morgan. Bird explained that athletes like Derek Jeter, LeBron James and Stephen Curry already had their platforms where they made sure to narrate their stories in a way they wanted it to be told. However, she expressed her disappointment, “Those platforms covered women for sure but it was just like a percentage of the coverage and then as I mentioned earlier at that time women’s athletes were only receiving 4% of all media coverage.”
Bird told via Study Hall, “That’s where she [Alex Morgan] called me, Simone and Chloe and was like this is the idea I have if we do this together you know obviously it ends up being called Togethxr and we could make a splash, we could make a dent.” She elaborated that the aim was to increase coverage of women in sports space and culture as well so that there can be enough spotlight on the stories which people might still be unaware of.
Bird then got experts on board, for investment, for topics and management needed to make the best out of stories they wanted to highlight in public. “There are of course people that are experts in the space that are the ones running the day to day and that’s how Togethxr has has been rolling since,” the retired hooper stated. Along with Morgan, the media company’s co-founders include Olympic champions Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel.
However, this venture is not the only project that Bird has involvement in. Later on, she had another opportunity of starting a production company with her fiancée and former USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe.
