The WNBA has seen some big legends play in the league over the years with the likes of Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie all contributing to the women’s game in one way or the other. While the aforementioned names have been a huge influence on the league none of them have had the longevity that Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird had with the star spending over 20 years playing for the Washington team. A one team player throughout her career Sue Bird was chosen as the first overall pick by the Seattle Storm during the 2002 WNBA draft and led the side to 4 WNBA titles while winning the Commissioners Cup once in 2021. Although Bird is a certified WNBA legend the former UCONN star was always destined for greatness. The 43-year-old was a recipient of the Naismith award and won the NCAA championship twice during her time in college making her one of the few individuals in the WNBA that has achieved this feat. Apart from her successes in American soil the Israeli American has also won multiple trophies in Europe as she bounced around teams in Russia during the WNBA off season winning 5 Euro League championships during that time.
Having left a huge impact regardless of the place she is in it is no surprise that Sue Bird has made quite the fortune during her time in the WNBA. The 13x WNBA All-Star reportedly earned a total sum of $1.8 million through her WNBA contracts and was one of the highest paid players in the league at one conjecture. While the amount may pale in comparison to NBA players the figure is still decent when compared to the rest of the WNBA leaving many to wonder what is Sue Bird’s net worth?

WNBA legend Sue Bird had one of the longest stretching careers in the WNBA as the star spent 20 years suiting up for the Seattle Storm. During her time in the ‘Emerald City’ Bird signed a host of contracts with the franchise and was even one of the highest paid players in the league at one point but before she reached the stardom that she has today Sue started at the very bottom. In an interview with ’60 Minutes’ the legend revealed that she was given a $60,000 per year contract during her early years with the Storm before signing a lucrative contract with them in 2015.
The first big contract she was offered was during the 2015-16 season when the New York native signed a $673,000 contract for 5 years. This contract saw her earn a respectable $134,000 per year and was valid up until 2020 during which she became a core member of the Seattle Storm set up and built a domineering partnership with 2023 MVP Breanna Stewart. After the expiration of that contract Bird signed another deal with the Seattle Storm but unlike her previous one it was only for a year, and it offered the 4x WNBA champion a whopping $215,000 for her services. Although thought to be quite pricey at the time the gamble eventually paid off for the Seattle based team as Bird went onto help them win the championship that season before going on to sign another shocking contract a year later. In early 2022 it was announced that Sue Bird would be returning for her final season but to everyone’s surprise the Seattle legend signed a 1-year deal worth $72,141 which was less than half of what she earned just a year ago. Despite only earning in five figures in her final season, which was shockingly low for her standards, Sue Bird finished her careers as one of the most well-paid athletes in WNBA history as she earned a total of $2.4 million dollars during her time in the league.
Apart from her earnings in the WNBA Sue Bird also cashed in heavy checks for the time she spent playing in Russia as she played 11 seasons in the country while winning 5x Russian league titles. Having suited up for three different sides during her time in the red country, the 5x Olympic gold medalist was reportedly paid 10 times more than what she made in the WNBA with the legend once stating that she is “a millionaire because of it (her time in Russia).”

With Sue Bird having spent over 20 years in the WNBA it is no surprise that the legend has earned quite the sum for her time in Seattle, add to that her earnings in Russia and it becomes more evident that the star is in fact a millionaire. While Bird’s millionaire status is obvious her earnings during her playing career only represents one half of her wealth as the star reportedly has a net worth of $10 million as of 2023. This figure accounts for all of Sue Bird’s financial portfolio’s which includes her endorsements, career earnings, and assets as the Seattle legend looks to build on the $10 million valuation and adjust to a life away from the court.
While her endorsements worth $1.5 million with Nike, Symetra and American Express are common knowledge to most, it is her assets away from basketball that takes her net worth to 8 digits. Bird who currently resides in Seattle has assets in form of real estate and reportedly has properties in New York, Connecticut, Los Angeles, while also having a home in Israel. Apart from being a real-estate mogul the former WNBA champion also has a host of cars with her collection boasting vehicles from the likes of Mercedes, Lexus, and Tesla.
