Sheryl Swoopes stands firm—Is she right to be unapologetic about her Caitlin Clark comments?

It’s not new for Sheryl Swoopes to get into trouble over remarks about Caitlin Clark. However, this time what is different is that Swoopes has decided to maintain her ground. And this comes after a drama ensued between Swoopes and the ESPN analyst Elle Duncan. This had a lot of hooping enthusiasts slamming Swoopes for her comments. Nonetheless, the 4x WNBA Champion feels no remorse for her point of view.

Recently, Swoopes gave her view on Duncan’s apology in the aftermath of the outrage. “I’ll be very honest with you. It doesn’t really bother me like for those people that I don’t know coz you’re either gonna like me, love me or hate me. And that’s okay with me… But when it happens to be someone that I respect that I like, and I think that I have a pretty good relationship with and in this case I am referring to Elle Duncan. I always had nothing but respect for Elle…,” Swoopes stated, via Queens of the Court.

After listing her rather comfortable relationship with Duncan, Swoopes emphasized that she had not listened to her podcast properly and had taken things out of context. “Like what you’re saying is so wrong but it goes to your point of taking stuff out of context. And, you know, she reached out to me, we had a conversation, and she admitted that what she did was wrong, she didn’t listen to the podcast…I can appreciate her putting herself out there and apologizing,” Swoopes added.

Swoopes had chosen Angel Reese over Clark for the Rookie of the Year award before enumerating that “Indiana has better players than Chicago. From top to bottom,” and despite that weren’t making it to the playoffs. The comments went viral in a few hours and caught the attention of Clark fans who criticized Swoopes. The 3x WNBA MVP also faced a major backlash from Duncan who expounded, “I love her but she’s wrong here.” Duncan further stated that Swoopes’ comments looked like personal criticism instead of being constructive.

Following the support from Duncan, fans slammed Swoopes even more. However, Duncan took a 360-degree turn when she apologized to Swoopes. As per Duncan, she was “rushing… for not taking my time and just REACTING.” Furthermore, Duncan also revealed texting and apologizing to Swoopes for her remarks. And now, Swoopes has come forward to accept the apology and divulge that “she(Duncan) reached out to me” and “admitted that what she did was wrong, she didn’t listen to the podcast.” However, in the previous instance, Swoopes was the only one apologizing.

When Clark was with the Iowa Hawkeyes and had surpassed Kelsey Plum in the scoring department, Swoopes had been critical of Clark for doing it in 5 years instead of 4. She miscalculated and thought that Clark had taken the fifth year of COVID-19 eligibility given to her. This also drew a strong reaction from Clark’s fans who didn’t spare Swoopes. However, Swoopes soon realized her fault and asked for forgiveness.
