Breanna Stewart in June, became the fastest WNBA player to score 5,000 career points, surpassing Diana Taurasi. The two-time champion has come to be an essential presence for the New York Liberty as well as for Team USA as a leader and one of the most efficient scorers. “She’s one of the greatest players of all time… She amazes me every day,” coach Sandy Brondello had said of Stewart. However, there’s more to the reigning league’s MVP than just her impressive career.

The WNBA star has been popular not only for her prowess on the court but also for her beautiful family and her life as a mother to two kids. Let’s delve into the heartwarming details of her personal life, from meeting her wife to becoming a proud parent.

Beyond the court, Stewart finds unwavering support in her wife, Marta Xargay. A former star player herself, Xargay previously shined for Phoenix Mercury and in her native Spain’s professional leagues alongside the 2016 Olympics. The couple hasn’t shied away from sharing their love story, offering fans occasional glimpses into their happy life together through social media.

Stewart first crossed paths with Xargay on the international stage in 2018, when both were playing for Dynamo Kursk, a professional women’s basketball club in Russia. Initially, they didn’t talk much, but a few months in, this chance encounter grew into a beautiful connection when Stewart injured her leg in 2019. “Me being injured was like a blessing in disguise,” she said via Bleacher Report YouTube film. “Those moments and memories were huge for kind of what helped blossom our relationship into what it is.”

Their relationship accelerated into a whirlwind in 2021, when they got engaged, married, and welcomed their first daughter all in the same year and in a matter of four months. Ruby Mae Stewart Xargay, the couple’s first off-spring, was born via surrogate in August that year.

Breanna Stewart’s Motherhood Journey

Breanna and Marta had started planning their pregnancy back in 2020. During the off season, they began their interviews for surrogates. The whole process from thereon required a lot of attention, frequent check-ins, and Stewart managed it all while focusing on Basketball. On the court, she was Breanna Stewart, the star forward, but off of one, she soon transformed to a wife and a soon-to-be mother, she accepts.

The two had kept the pregnancy a secret, letting the news out only among the close circle. They revealed they wanted the special time to be just for themselves for a while. And when they let the world know, they were full of love and gratitude. “Becoming a mom is bigger than anything else that I’ve done and I look forward to every beautiful and challenging moment as a family of three,” Stewart told People following her daughter’s birth.

The hooper’s wife, Marta, also uploaded an Instagram post captioned, “The best part of this year has been becoming a mother and growing a family with my incredible wife.” Stewart was hopping emotion then, having just attained a remarkable feat.

Ruby was born just a day after Stewart had secured a gold medal at Tokyo Olympics for Team USA. “It was a surreal moment,” she said to People, emphasizing that not a lot of female athletes have the opportunity to peak in their careers whilst also building a family. It was ‘the most important moment of her life,’ for Breanna Stewart, living the best of both her worlds. She found herself reliving the moment yet again, last year.

In November 2023, Stewart and Xargay welcomed their second child, a baby boy named Theo Josep Stewart Xargay, expanding her loving family to four. Taking to Instagram, Breanna Stewart shared the exciting news of their second child’s arrival. Before this, they shared another joint Instagram post in May with the caption:“When 3 turns to 4… Oct. 2023. Happy Mother’s Day!”

All through this, Stewart was also planning the launch of Unrivaled, a new 3-on-3, full-court style women’s basketball league. Developed alongside Napheesa Collier, the announcement was made in May this year and is set to take off by January 2025. The league will offer highest average salary in women’s professional sports league history as per API. Thinking as a mother therein, Collier and Stewart plan to house the players 15 minutes of the facility.

“Stewie and I both have families and understand the importance of childcare,” Collier said. “Make sure the parents in the league are taken care of.”
