The coaching landscape in the WNBA has been evolving at a lightning-fast pace ever since the offseason began. From coaching firings to new hires, there’s been no shortage of changes. Teresa Weatherspoon, Tyler Marsh, Christie Sides, Stephanie White—no one has been immune to the shakeup. And now, it’s the New York Liberty’s turn to face a major shift.

Roneeka Hodges, the Liberty’s assistant coach, has decided to leave her role and join the Connecticut Sun. She will be taking over the throne as an assistant coach under their newly appointed head coach, Rachid Meziane. Taking on the challenge of coaching the No. 1 defensive team in the league isn’t going to be an easy task, but with her championship experience, Hodges is more than equipped to handle the job.

While this marks the beginning of Hodges’ new journey with the Sun, it also signals the end of a 15-year professional relationship between her and Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello.

Their connection dates back to 2010 when Brondello coached Hodges on the San Antonio Silver Stars. That bond has lasted through the years, translating into their coaching stints at Liberty. Hodges spent three years in her role under Brondello after her time at Colgate. “I’m excited for the chance to join Sandy Brondello as she puts her stamp on the New York Liberty franchise. I’m looking forward to assisting her in her quest,” the 15th overall in the 2005 WNBA Draft had said.

For the Liberty, Hodges’ departure is undoubtedly a tough blow. Under Brondello’s leadership, with Hodges by her side, the Liberty captured their first-ever WNBA championship in 2024. Not only that, but the duo also led the team to back-to-back 30+ win seasons, cementing New York’s dominance in the league. The Suns are excited to use the experience elsewhere.

The Connecticut Sun couldn’t be more thrilled to add Hodges to their team. Sun general manager Morgan Tuck expressed her excitement, saying, “Roneeka brings a strong work ethic, a deep understanding of the game, and championship experience, which will contribute greatly to maintaining a winning culture.” It’s clear that they’re expecting big things from Hodges in her new role.

Hodges herself is equally excited about the opportunity, sharing, “I’m excited to begin this new journey with Coach Meziane and the Sun organization. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of the game and experiences as we continue to grow a winning culture.”

This move is big for the Sun, with Hodges bringing 11 years of WNBA experience and coaching stints at the Liberty, Colgate, and Old Dominion. Her unique perspective will be a major asset, according to Meziane. Despite making 8-straight trips to the playoffs, including 2 finals and 4 semis appearance, a championship remains a dream to grasp. Something of a scene similar to the Liberty. Could Mezaine-Hodges combination finally be the answer?
