DiJonai Carrington shines, but is the WNBA failing its players with poor management and scheduling?

The Connecticut Sun came up with their new marketing, garnering fans across Boston last December when they decided to host a game at TD Garden. Following this it was decided that the Los Angeles Sparks clash against the Sun will be held at the Boston arena. However, just hours before the historic game the Sun star DiJonai Carrington came to the fore to criticize the WNBA for ruining their big day.

Carrington shared her take against the WNBA and Cathy Engelbert for not broadcasting the game on national TV. “Since we gotta do our own promo… We’re playing at the @tdgarden tonight & it’s SOLD OUT 19k+. First W game here ever. Historic. Not on tv, but you can catch it right here on twitter. 🙃 @WNBA,” Carrington enumerated on the social media networking site X on Tuesday.

The issue is really grave since the game as mentioned was being played at the new arena to get as many fans as possible. The Sun craze caught onto the Boston fans, which affirmed that the planning was done in the right direction. The game was a complete sell-out with 19,156 tickets being sold, making it the highest spectators contest in the Sun’s history.

Thus it was expected that the matchup would garner more attention if it was telecasted on national television. However, the WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert seemed to have other plans. The hype around the first WNBA game to be held at TD Gardens was noted from the fact that popular WNBA writers like Myles Ehrlich had tweeted about it being a complete sellout and announced the positive news on Friday.

However, the game not being televised would have definitely hurt Carrington. Hopefully, the Sun president Jen Rizzotti might also come forward to express his disappointment and do something about it.

Have an interesting take?

Rizzotti was thrilled last December when the Sun made public their ambitions of hosting a WNBA game at the TD Garden. This is the home arena for the Sun’s brother franchise the Boston Celtics of the NBA and the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). As stated, the arrangement was done to get more fans, especially from the Boston area some of whom have already been followers of the Sun franchise.

Plus the game on Tuesday was kept at the arena keeping in mind that the talented stars would get a chance to show their skills which in turn would “continue to celebrate and embrace the momentum the WNBA is creating.”

Even in this season, the Sun is going strong with a 19-7 record and hopefully, when they take the court against the Sparks tonight, Carrington & Co. will emerge victorious. And if this happens, perhaps Engelbert and other WNBA officials will feel disappointed by their decision of not to televise the game.
