Caitlin Clark taking over the greats in the game is perhaps the most entertaining thing to watch in the WNBA right now. She’s soaring past all the criticism and doubts. Now, she has even surpassed the veteran and Phoenix Mercury legend, Diana Taurasi’s record. From being evident just a few days ago, the rookie now stands just a handful shots away from the missed top spot. 

With 122 3 points made, Caitlin Clark now holds the second position for the single-season record. She needed 2 more to surpass the 3x champion before heading into the game against the Connecticut Sun. After the first 3-point, 3 minutes into the game, off a Kelsey Mitchell assist, the rookie shot a 30-foot jumper about 2 minutes later. With that, Clark has far surpassed the rookie record of 85 set by Rhyne Howard. 

The Mercury Queen set her record in her third year in the WNBA in 2006. There’s no doubt that Clark has set a new benchmark by surpassing her record in her debut year. 3-point icon Sabrina Ionescu holds the top spot with 128 three-pointers in a single season, which she set in 2023. It’s only a matter of time before Clark will have a chance to surpass her.

The rookie surely is doing everything in her power to keep up with the pros. And while fans are thrilled about it, applauding a great start to the career, it is a rather emotional one on the other end, with the 2004 no.1 pick being surrounded with final season rumors. 

Is this the last WNBA battle for Diana Taurasi?

The 3X WNBA champ hasn’t said much on the matter. However, the Mercury has made it somewhat clear, suggesting that this could be Taurasi’s last appearance on the WNBA court. This might mean the Mercury star is contemplating retirement after her 20th year in the pro league.

She has spent her entire career with the Phoenix Mercury, and it seems only fitting for her to retire with the same team. She is also nearing the end of her two-year contract, which she signed with the Mercury back in 2023.

Rumors of Taurasi’s retirement began circulating when the team’s official X page made a cryptic comment, hinting that the final two home games could be her last. While the WNBA star has yet to make an official statement, she did say back in 2022 that she wouldn’t play if she feels she “sucks” at it. “When I’m done playing, I’m just going to stop playing. I’m not going to ease my way out. I want to play, and when I suck, I won’t play. Trust me, I’ll be in those workouts in the winter and be like, ‘Hmm, that’s it,'” Taurasi said in a conversation with ESPN. 

Well, while Taurasi most certainly doesn’t suck right now, averaging 15.1 points and 3.9 rebounds, the rumors have left fans wondering if this is the last opportunity to watch her WNBA Star in action.
