Is Caitlin Clark the new face of women's basketball, overshadowing legends like Diana Taurasi?

But these rookies, they don’t want to be labeled rookies. They’re ballers, they’re coming after you,” Nancy Lieberman claimed earlier this month. Standing a little true on that front today might be Caitlin Clark with her race to yet another record. Two of the game’s greats — Diana Taurasi and Sabrina Ionescu — stand in the way as the 22-year-old remains a formidable force.

Often described as ‘The Sharpshooter’, the Indiana Fever guard has now recorded 120 three-pointers this season. Having surpassed Rhyne Howard’s previous rookie record of 85, Clark is now nearing the figures of established veterans. A tweet from Stat Mamba highlighted this impressive achievement. “Most 3PM in a single season: 128 — Sabrina Ionescu, 121 — Diana Taurasi, 120 — Caitlin Clark”, the tweet read.

While Caitlin Clark is in her debut season, Diana Taurasi set her 121 mark in the third year of her career in 2006. Moreover, Sabrina Ionescu created her record just last year. However, while it is a bit of an effort to surpass Ionescu’s 128 mark just yet, the rookie just needs two more successful attempts to edge past the Mercury GOAT. With the final game against the Mystics still to come on Thursday, breaking this record is well within Clark’s reach.

But that wasn’t the only highlight from Caitlin Clark’s last game. In fact, after facing off against the Dallas Wings, the Iowa alum added another record to her impressive rookie season.

Caitlin Clark sets career high and breaks rookie points record

When the former Hawkeye stepped on court against the Dallas Wings on Sunday, she had to revamp herself after a couple of underwhelming performance against Aces. Well, Clark truly succeeded in her mission and even scored her career-high points in a single game by notching 35 in her name. She also dished out eight assists and shot 10-of-22 from the field, including a stellar 6-of-14 from beyond the arc.

But the crowning achievement of Caitlin Clark’s standout game was breaking yet another record. Her impressive scoring spree not only set a new career-high but also made history. Clark now holds the record for the most points in a single season by a rookie, having amassed 761 points. This surpasses the previous record of 744 points set by Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx in 2006.

She now averages 19.1 points along with 8.4 assists and is yet to miss a game in her debut season. Not only has she shattered records, including the all-time single-season rookie points, but she continues to chase down veteran milestones, proving she’s a force to be reckoned with.
