The Connecticut Sun clashed against the Chicago Sky at the Wintrust Arena on Saturday. What looked to be a one-sided match up until the first half, as the Sky lead with a 50-42 margin, soon turned upside down when the Sun star DeWanna Bonner took a narrow escape in the last minutes of the fourth quarter to help her team clinch victory.

Overall, Bonner basketed a team-high 19 points with 8 rebounds which considerably helped her team. But this is not the first time that Bonner did the impossible. Her performances against the Sky have always been a display of brilliance. Let’s have a look at some of them today.

In 2023 Bonner played her last regular season game against the Sky, losing by a margin of 102-91 in overtime. Bonner basketed 7 points in the game with 3 rebounds and an equal number of assists. Previously in August, Bonner had played a game against the Sky potting 13 points with 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

In July, Bonner had unleashed a demon against the Sky, throttling a whopping 21 points with 6 rebounds and a singular assist. This performance reminded people of another of her spectacular performances in July against the Sky when she had scored 26 points with 8 rebounds and 1 assist. Overall, in the regular season of 2023, Bonner averaged a decent 17.4 points per game with 5.6 rebounds per match.

But all is not lost for the Sky. When fans usually speak of Bonner’s performance, they forget that once during the 2022 season, the Sky dominated her. The post-season performances of the 2022 season against the Sky give a glimpse of Bonner’s weakness despite commendable displays in most games by the Alabama-born.

Previously in 2022, Bonner played in the semi-finals against the Chicago Sky. The Sun beat the Sky by 3-2 in the series. Bonner’s highest in the postseason against the Sky came in game 4 when she thrashed 19 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Another of her noteworthy performances was when she potted 18 points against Chicago with 11 rebounds, therefore basketing a double-double. 

She replicated her 15-point performance in Game 1 and Game 5, spoiling Chicago’s plans on both occasions, throttling 9 rebounds and 5 assists. She smashed 13.8 points per game with 7.4 rebounds per match against the Sky in the postseason.

The hope for the Sky came in game 2 when Bonner played for 25 minutes but could only pot 2 points with 2 rebounds and 3 assists. This performance of Bonner reveals that the Sky can make a comeback in the next few games and contain Bonner. All they need is to screen the 36-year-old.

Overall, Bonner’s performances have been mostly a cause of constant trouble for the Sky barring one occasion in the past 10 games. The Sky needs to take inspiration from the 2022 WNBA Game 2 and hopefully will be able to emerge victorious.
