Everyone would think that the fallout from Chennedy Carter hip-checking Caitlin Clark in the teams’ very first matchup would have ended by now. However, every time the two go head-to-head, the incident resurfaces. But this time, Carter’s flagrant foul habit became the talk of the town when she dropped Seattle Storm’s Jewell Loyd to the ground. Consequently, with 2 flagrant-1 points already in her ledger, can the hooper keep suspension at bay?
In the post-game press conference, Chicago’s head coach Teresa Weatherspoon shared her thoughts on the same. When a reporter asked her about the possibility of a 1-game suspension lurking over Carter, T-spoon said, “That’s a conversation we’ll have so she’ll know and recognize and understand it. ‘Cause she’s doing what we ask her to. Not allow anything easy at the rim, not doing anything intentional to harm anyone. Just so it happens, this is what they see on the film and this is what happens with the flagrant foul.”
Last night, during Chicago’s 71-84 loss to the Seattle Storm, Carter was called for flagrant-1 after she swiped hard at Jewell Loyd. She completely missed the ball and swiped Loyd’s head instead. It looked like a hard foul and everyone in the arena gasped watching replays.

The head coach further added, “She’ll be fine. She’ll come out and do what she’s supposed to do. She’ll remain aggressive but just understanding what’s at stake.”
Interestingly, Weatherspoon had responded in a similar way just a month ago as well. Then, Chennedy Carter drew a flagrant-1 foul against Caitlin Clark. The head coach promised that time, “Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”
In her official statement, Weatherspoon also said, “Physical play, intensity, and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball.” The head coach mentioned there that Chennedy Carter got caught up in the heat of the moment and now understands that this is not what Chicago Sky stands for.
Flagrant fouls on Chennedy Carter and WNBA rules
The fourth overall pick from the 2020 draft is quite well known for her aggressive defense approach. In fact, after she hip-checked Caitlin Clark, even the former WNBA star Chiney Ogwumike mentioned that Chennedy Carter has faced difficulties with her playing style. The incident with the Fever rookie was whistled for an “away-from-the-ball” foul. Clark received a free throw for the same. The same foul was later reviewed, and the WNBA ruled it for a flagrant foul.

Last night, Chennedy Carter again got into the heat of the moment. She pushed Jewell Loyd to the ground as the 2x Olympian was going for a layup. Now, the 5-ft-9 shooting guard has already picked up two points for flagrant-1 fouls. According to the WNBA’s rule book, a player with 4 or 5 such points has the possibility of suspension. The league can also charge an additional fine from them.

Still, Carter has not received any of the two rulings so far. But seeing that the Chicago Sky has only played 20 games, the 2020 WNBA All-Rookie Team may need to walk on eggshells. While Weatherspoon had previously also promised that Carter would not commit any such non-sportsman-like act, she has failed in just a month. Only time will tell if she will be able to truly make Chennedy Carter understand.
