With the regular WNBA season coming to a close it is time to pick the favorites to win this year’s title as the playoffs begin in a few days’ time. While the current champions, the Las Vegas Aces are primed for another title there could be a potential upset in the making as the New York Liberty have a good shout as well. Sabrina Ionescu’s side have had a great year so far and led the Eastern Conference throughout the season. Boasting a record of 32-7 with a game to spare the NY team has the second-best record in the league and looks primed to beat the Aces.

Although Sabrina Ionescu is clearly the star for the Liberty their off-season dealings have made sure she has enough support available when needed. Despite her leading the league in 3 pointers and making WNBA history, though, the star was recently snubbed for her 28-year-old teammate as a former Dallas Mavericks star from the NBA discussed the potential stars in this year’s WNBA playoffs.

During a recent episode of the podcast, The Old Man and the Three, former Mavericks star JJ Reddick discussed the NY Liberty’s championship chances as he took a moment to discuss Sabrina Ionescu’s 28-year-old teammate.

Explaining how the Liberty had got a “ton of headlines” for adding Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, the 39-year-old then went on to praise the latter as he was clearly impressed by her addition to the squad.

Speaking of the 28-year-old Bosnian international the former Dallas man felt that the MVP could be the difference maker in the playoffs as he reiterated this point to his co-host by asking him, “How would you assess her (Jones) regular season, her fit on this team but also her value in the playoffs?”

Keeping his response minimal JJ’s guest host Nekias Duncan agreed with Reddick’s previous claims as he labelled Jonquel Jones as the “bellwether of this team.”

While one cannot deny Jonquel’s immense talent, the Liberty is still by far Sabrina Ionescu’s team and with her recently making three-point history it’s surprising that the Mavericks star would snub the NY Liberty icon for Jonquel Jones.

Sabrina Ionescu made history earlier this year as the New York Liberty stalwart crushed the 3-point contest during the WNBA All-Star weekend. Drowning 25 out of possible 27 shots, the 2x WNBA All-Star set a record of 37 points which is the best shooting figure ever recorded in the NBA or the WNBA.

Eclipsing the previous record of 31 held by the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry the 25-year-old achieved this feat as she converted 20 shots in a row without fail, averaging a shooting percentage of 92% in the game. Putting this into perspective, no other NBA star in the history of the 3-point contest has ever crossed the 85% threshold making this quite an impressive feat. Sabrina not only crushed the 3-point contest but also leads the WNBA this term for most 3 pointers made.
