Caitlin Clark's leaked texts vs. Angel Reese's rise—Who's the real WNBA star to watch?

Sheryl Swoopes has been in troubled waters over Caitlin Clark. After pointing fingers at the Fever rookie and ignoring her contribution to the team’s on-court brilliance, the Hall of Famer had become the center of criticism for Clark’s fans. However, in a twist of events, Swoopes came forward to reveal the texts between her and Clark regarding the mistake she made when she had called out Clark for surpassing Kelsey Plum’s all-time leading women’s NCAA scorer record in 5 years and not 4. Swoopes had apparently apologized to Clark which she accepted. And now when Angel Reese has dropped her podcast’s first episode, Unapologetically Angel, Swoopes once again came forward to support the seventh-overall pick, probably hinting that all is not well between Clark and herself.

On Thursday’s episode of her latest podcast, Reese applauded Swoopes for keeping her composure despite being surrounded by the controversies. The Chi-Town Barbie opined that Swoopes deserved to get flowers for being a legend, and when the snippet of the same was posted on X, Swoopes commented three heart emojis on it.

“You know who I wanna give my flowers to? Sheryl Swoopes. And I think I am really giving my flowers because she’s got her flowers but I think she needs to be reminded that she’s that girl. Like you know you’re that girl, that woman, you been that, you still that. You forever gonna be that. And like I know like so much going on social media with everything going on and people have attacked her and said so much stuff. And I texted her yesterday and I was like you know you do that. You know you a legend. Your resume speak for itself,” Reese had stated.

“You ain’t gotta speak on nothing. I done see her get out of character on social media a couple of days. You know you ain’t gotta pop up like that. But yeah… she’s a legend and somebody that I’ve always looked up to. She gonna keep it real with you. Okay, I wanna podcast with you. She’s ten toes behind what’s right,” Reese added when talking about Swoopes on the Unapologetically Angel podcast.

The 4x WNBA Champion off late has been surrounded by a lot of controversies. On Tuesday, Swoopes took shots at Nancy Lieberman and Stephen A. Smith after Lieberman revealed that she had called Swoopes in the aftermath of her comments on Clark in March when the latter had broken Pete Maravich’s record. But the Hall of Famer denied getting any calls regarding it only to allege on Tuesday that Smith and Lieberman were threatening her.

Swoopes had put Smith’s number while calling him out on X before pointing out Lieberman’s aggressive comments towards Clark’s rival Chennedy Carter for pushing the Iowa alum during a game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever in June. Thus, Swoopes has been involved in a lot of altercations and to tackle the allegations of being a Clark hater, she put out texts between Clark and her that proved she respects Clark for her achievements.

Have an interesting take?

Swoopes on Monday shared screenshots of her private conversation with Clark. The broadcaster in the texts could be seen apologizing to Clark for making a mistake in considering 2023-24 as her fifth year with the Hawkeyes. “Covid year has me all confused…Lol! I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed,” Swoopes had enumerated in the texts.

If the texts are to be believed then Clark had accepted her apology remarking that she “really appreciate(s) you reaching out and there’s no hard feelings,” before thanking her for “for inspiring girls like me and building the foundation and platform we have today !” To which Swoopes concluded by expressing that she “appreciate(s) you and your game” and Clark has been taking it to a “whole new level.”

Perhaps, now that Reese has come forward to support Swoopes, fans will recollect Swoopes’s achievements in basketball and stop slamming her for critiquing Clark. And the 53-year-old will be able to continue on with her broadcasting duties without much issues.
