As an athlete, Dawn Staley has won three gold medals at the Olympics and her 4th as the head coach of the United States national team. Her first and the most significant one was the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She led the 1996 team to an undefeated 60-0 record.

She knew it was not a game but a mission, and she chose not to get overwhelmed by it.“We didn’t really have those profound conversations. It was OK then to not feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. We were task-oriented. But when you grow and remove yourself from that time, you do have those conversations now. It is cool to have been part of the evolution of a sport — to have seen it, felt it, lived it — and take the time to really, really try to appreciate it and think how to keep it going,” Staley reasoned.

The next milestone she covered was winning the second consecutive gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She led the team with 4.0 points and 3.6 assists in every game at the tournament. After that, Staley returned for another Olympic campaign in 2004 Athens.

Alongside fellow veteran leaders Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes, Staley led the team with 4.1 points and 2.9 assists per game. Her performance led her to the USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year honor. She was also the flag bearer for the United States in the opening ceremony parade.

By this time, Staley was entering into a transition phase of her career. Hence, it was her final appearance at the Olympics as an athlete. However, she continued the journey on the sidelines in the future.

Coach Staley at the Olympics

The next time Dawn Staley appeared as an assistant coach for the USA national team was in 2006 when newcomers Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, and Candace Parker picked up the momentum. As a result, they defeated Russia, Spain, and Brazil through all the stages of the tournament and won another gold. But, the journey for one of the finest coaches in women’s basketball was still long.

After that, she climbed the coaching ladder and was named the head coach of the U17 and U19 teams in 2014 and 2015. Moreover, she won gold at the U18 Americas Championship and the U19 FIBA World Championship. As a result, she was awarded the Code National Coach of the Year.

Then came the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where she again served as an assistant coach to the national team under the head coach Geno Auriemma and helped the team in winning their 6th consecutive gold.

Finally, her time came to take center stage as the head coach of the US national team in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, leading the team to a 6-0 record and extending hers to 45-0.
