The situation in the WNBA is spiraling out of hand. While the WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark’s supporters are not leaving any opportunity to taunt Chennedy Carter for pushing Clark, Carter and her supporters are also not taking a rest. In such aggravated circumstances, finally, the Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon has come forward to pacify the matter. But not directly.

As per Meghan Hall USA Today’s staff writer, Weatherspoon has released a statement clarifying her stance on the issue. While initially, she looked to be letting go of the subject remarking it as an action done in competitive spirit, the 58-year-old has now come forward to the fore to accept that Carter’s behavior wasn’t the best. However, Weatherspoon is yet to speak her mind about Carter’s social media behavior. Her reaction might have certainly hurt Chicago fans who were anticipating a long-standing battle with Clark, and shutting the latter with their replies.

“Physical play, intensity, and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball. Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game. She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will,” Weatherspoon stated.

“As a team, we will grow together and continue to work hard to display strong leadership and set a positive example for our competitors, fans, and partners,” Weatherspoon continued in the statement.

The issue started when Carter took a violent turn pushing Clark during the game. Clark fell to the ground and that had a lot of people concerned about her well-being, but not Carter. Though Carter was given a common foul and Clark potted the free throw, the latter’s fans were still not satisfied. And then, Carter took a step that worsened the situation.

During the post-match press conference, Carter refused to answer any Clark-related questions, The head coach Weatherspoon too tried to nip the issue in the bud by trying to justify it in the competitiveness of the game. Carter then took to social media where she was being slammed by Clark’s fans.

Further, Carter took the social media networking platform Threads and remarked “& that’s that on that cause beside three-point shooting what does she bring to the table man,” taking a sarcastic dig at Clark’s gameplay. Next Carter also involved herself in an altercation with a fan and termed herself as a “TROLL” pointing to the fact that her words were extremely dangerous for Clark and her followers. At the same time, Carter’s foul was upgraded to Flagrant 1 by the WNBA. Meanwhile, as mentioned, Weatherspoon had also previously taken the matter lightly.

When Carter was asked a flurry of questions regarding Clark, Weatherspoon looked to stand by her mentee not answering any of them. The Texas-born coach stated “That’s enough. We’re good. She’s good.” as per Athlon Sports.

She had also downplayed the incident when she was asked about the players’ equation. “They’re just competing. It’s all they are doing is just competing.” Therefore, Weatherspoon did not try to check Carter and looked like justifying it as a heated moment common in a competitive environment.

Perhaps, fans would now take a rest after Weatherspoon’s statement. Furthermore, hopefully, Carter too will not pursue the matter any further as Clark concentrates on her next opponents.
