‘Period!’ A’nother big sweep for the Aces and their superstar A’ja Wilson. For 32 games now, the 2x Olympic gold medalist has shown just how capable she is. And since the Olympic break, she has only gotten so much better. Putting up out-worldly numbers to beat the opponents, (single-handedly?) the veteran has set herself apart from the rest for one accolade and that is the MVP award. Which she will go for the third year straight. However, looking at her recent few performances, Shannon Sharpe has quite a peculiar request from the WNBA.
After the Las Vegas Aces won their road game, 97-79, to the Phoenix Mercury, the Footprint Arena gave respect where it was due with a standing ovation. With that, the 29-year-old forward also caught Sharpe’s attention.
Taking it to his official X account, the Hall of Famer wrote, “Can you receive an MVP award during the season? @_ajawilson22 is the clear MVP of the @WNBA. Let’s make history and present the award 2 her while the season is still be played. SHE’S ON A NEW LEVEL. #WNBAMVP“

Indeed, a mention-worthy request for a future Hall of Famer like A’ja Wilson.

In tonight’s game, the MVP frontrunner put up 41 points on 16 of 23 shooting. She also added 17 rebounds and 2 steals in the season series winner over Phoenix. The Aces’ all-time leading scorer certainly came to the desert with a purpose after a few disappointing games according to herself. She added 23 points from 9 of 12 shooting and 11 rebounds in just the first half of the game. Consequently, she broke and posted multiple records with this one game down.

The history-making record-breaking performance of A’ja Wilson
“She’s the greatest player to put on the uniform. Period. As she would say.” The Las Vegas head coach and the Aces legend Becky Hammon said this a long time ago for her 6-year veteran A’ja Wilson. And even though the Columbia native was putting up absurd numbers before she flew to France for the Paris Summer Games, her return has only become monstrous.

Have an interesting take?
With tonight’s game into account, she has now had 72 games with 20+ points and 10+ rebounds in her WNBA career. This is only third most in history as she left Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie behind for their 71 such games. Tonight’s stat line also brought her ahead of Tina Charles for most 30+/10+ games in league history with seven.

Moreover, this was her second 40+ points game in the last three matchups. This will also be her fourth such career game as she ties with Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi for the record. Also, with her tonight’s stat line of 40+ points and 15+ rebounds, A’ja Wilson joined Parker as the only player to put up such numbers.
Though having made it to the playoffs, the Aces have eight more games to prove themselves just as dangerous as any, as they sit fourth on the table. Especially with A’ja Wilson at the helm, the back-to-back WNBA champions surely make a case for themselves for being the best despite the adversities. It will be interesting to see how this team pulls up in the last stretch before the playoffs tip-off.
