Oops, she did it again! This season, Chennedy Carter’s on-court physicality has dropped several jaws. First, it was Caitlin Clark, and now her shove was directed at her former Sky teammate, Marina Mabrey, whom Carter was seeing for the first time after Mabrey’s trade to the Connecticut Sun. It was only the first quarter when the drama unfolded, and as any player would, Mabrey was not happy about it.
In the postgame presser, Marina Mabrey answered one of the reporter’s questions regarding the foul and said, “I mean, there’s levels to this sh*t. So, I’m not gonna fight with that.” The matchup had started, and Mabrey had just caught a dime and was going for a layup. Chennedy Carter, being on Mabrey’s back, blocked the shot while hitting Mabrey on her nose, committing a foul.

Mabrey, on the receiving end, suddenly fell to the ground, holding her face in pain. As the medical staff rushed towards Mabrey’s aid, the officials looked up to the monitor to review the play. Having that done, they upgraded the play to a flagrant foul on Carter for unnecessary contact to Mabrey’s head.
This foul has increased Carter’s flagrant foul count to four, making her the league’s leader in this category. This behavior could very well push Carter to the edge of suspension if it continues on the court. Although, the Sun did catch up to the lead and defeated the Sky 82-80 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Despite the Sun’s victory, the WNBA fans were enraged by Chennedy Carter’s actions and even raised questions about the league’s officiating. Some even demanded the immediate ejection of #7.
Fans raised questions on WNBA officiating regarding Chennedy Carter’s play
What’s your perspective on:
Did the refs drop the ball by not ejecting Chennedy Carter? What's your take on this mess?
Have an interesting take?
She might be leading the Sky’s roster in points, but Carter’s actions seemed to have turned her into the league’s new-age bully, who likes to pull one on every other player. Maybe, that’s why a fan is asking for the matter to be investigated in depth as they wrote, “There needs to be a proper investigation into the Chicago Sky officiating. this is absolutely ridiculous and obvious at this point. how disgusting.” The fan is of the opinion that the officiating that took place in this matchup reflected the obvious omission of physicality from the referees’ side as they refused to call out such plays.
Extending that same sentiment, another fan commented, “Absolutely. Carter should’ve been ejected immediately.” Chennedy Carter’s reputation for aggressive play has been in the limelight lately. Even in this matchup, she appeared to intentionally hit Mabrey in the face with her forearm and that didn’t sit well with the fans. As Carter is just one flagrant foul away from automatic suspension, maybe this fan can heave a sigh of relief if that happens.
“Chennedy has assaulted two players this year already. They need to kick her out of the league,” wrote one netizen. In the last two matchups of the Chicago Sky against Indiana Fever, Chennedy Carter has on both occasions displayed extreme physicality towards the rookie. Not only this but even in one matchup against Sun, Carter had also shoved DiJonai Carrington to the ground. Seeing this, the fan urges the league to get rid of her.
Further, a fan recalled Carter’s past behavior and wrote, “Carter has already been kicked off 2 teams for biting people.” In the past, Carter has had issues with discipline. The first instance happened in 2021 when Carter was a second-year guard for the Dream.
It was the Dream’s matchup against the Las Vegas Aces and after the game concluded, Carter went to Williams to talk about her playing time and insisted on fighting Williams. However, Williams was not looking for a fight and withdrew herself from the situation. While nothing happened Carter was suspended indefinitely for “conduct detrimental to the team.”
The second incident came when Carter had her one-year tenure with the LA Sparks. However, her poor conduct followed Carter even after this change. As a result, she was waived by the Sparks after the season was over.
Moving on, not happy with how the officiating took place, another fan wrote, “That should have been a flagrant 2 on Carter. Very clearly was not making a play on the ball.” Given the intensity of Carter’s play, this fan believes that the appropriate foul from the referees should’ve been that of flagrant 2 but they chose to overlook it. Hence, the officiating in this fan’s eye was not up to the mark.
