All the talking before the game was about Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese. Or how would Kamilla Cardoso perform against Clark? Yet it was the 25-year-old Sky guard who found herself in the spotlight. Clark had felt the brunt of fouls during her games and even remarked, “I feel like I’m getting hammered.” Carter too set the league on fire during her WNBA debut and set a record that very few will get an opportunity to surpass.

The controversial play happened during the 3rd quarter and many fans felt the shove by Carter was a personal frustration. At the end of the third quarter, Clark interviewed with ESPN and replied “That’s just not a basketball play. But, you gotta play through it. That’s what basketball’s about at this level,” Clark said.

Clark was 22 years old when she entered the WNBA, but Carter became the youngest player in WNBA history to score 30 points at 21 years and 266 days when she put up 35 against Seattle (8/6). She was considered the top candidate for the WNBA Rookie of the Year award until she sustained an ankle injury in the team’s loss to the Connecticut Sun. Carter was sidelined for six games.

She returned to the court on August 30 and scored 26 points in 26 minutes against Los Angeles. Later she would go on to score at least 25 points on four occasions. At the end of the season, Carter was named to the 2020 WNBA All-Rookie Team. Even though Fever won the game by a point all the 3 rookies showed their capabilities.

Performance of rookies in today’s match

Kamilla Cardoso played her first game of the season, after suffering an injury during the preseason game. The Brazilian scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. She also added 6 rebounds for an impressive all-around performance. All this in just 18 minutes! Also, note her minutes were managed to reduce the chance of an injury.

Angel Reese scored 8 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes. She also assisted once and helped her team with 1 steal. While her shooting was below par with just 22.2% with 2-9. Clark had mentioned previously how important Reese is while rebounding and she once again proved it.

Caitlin Clark played 37 minutes and scored 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Though the numbers are average she managed to break another record. With that board, Clark joined Sabrina Ionescu as the only player to have at least 150 points, 50 rebounds, and 50 assists in their first 10 games. Due to injury, it took Ionescu two seasons to accomplish that feat. Clark is the first player to do it all in her rookie campaign.
