The Chennedy Carter – Caitlin Clark issue just went out of hand. Carter pushed Clark and even hurled a derogatory status at her in Threads. While Carter seemed unapologetic when fans and other athletes tried to check on her, she even went on to criticize a fan for siding with Clark. While all this was happening, one person who didn’t speak even a single word was, surprisingly, Clark herself.
Recently, two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy came forward to support Clark, and his argument was accepted by most fans. McCoy was present in a conversation on Speak along with famous names such as Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, and James Jones. Amid a flurry of questions, LeSean shared his take on Tuesday, with vivid insights on the tussle between Caitlin Clark and Chennedy Carter.

McCoy, with his long-term vision, reasoned why Clark was beneficial for the game and how Carter was trying to make a name for herself by using this controversy. Vocalizing his feelings, LeSean also pointed out that Clark was silent throughout the fiasco. And this resonated with a lot of fans.
“When you look at this play from Chennedy… though, right, like, there’s no basketball part of that, and the game doesn’t need. Any sport, if it’s… if it’s basketball, women or men, there’s no… you call on her name and then you… what is that, right? And, and, let me help you people out for a second, um… Chennedy Carter is her name. I know a lot of you guys don’t know who that is, um, she actually got drafted fourth overall, right, 2020. She’s been on with three teams so far; so up player like that, that’s not known, that’s trying to get her name out there; they do stuff,” McCoy stated.
While Chennedy Carter was drafted as the fourth overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, she hasn’t enjoyed a long, stable stint with any team. In 2021, she was suspended by the Atlanta Dream, allegedly on grounds of her behavior. Next, she found a place in the Los Angeles Sparks, only to be benched a number of matches for “poor conduct.” She did not participate in the 2023 WNBA season, and now, she is with the Chicago Sky, embroiled in a new controversy.
“Then, if you look at the teammates on the sideline cheering, clapping,. It up… it’s like if I’m playing football, somebody does something dirty to the quarterback and then you look on the side where the fans, or where, where the team’s at, and they’re clapping you, you can see that there’s conversation of hate going on, right?,” McCoy added on the matter. Then, he also shed light on the fact that Chennedy Carter’s teammate, Angel Reese, got up from the bench and started clapping when Clark fell to the ground.
Therefore, it seemed that she might have approved of Carter’s actions, and hence, many are speculating that there must have been conversations of hate going on in the team against Clark. “My problem is, y’all hate on the wrong person. You shouldn’t hate on a person that’s actually making a game big for y’all. All these freaking years of watching women’s basketball, there’s probably been dirty plays, but you’re not talking about on Speak you not talking about on Fox, talking on these other networks, because this girl, Caitlin, is bringing that attention to the biggest problem,” McCoy carried on.
Meanwhile, McCoy reasoned that Clark shouldn’t be looked at as a threat because she is bringing more visibility to WNBA athletes. The league has recorded 93% more sales due to Clark this season. Furthermore, the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty game had ticket revenue of around $2 million. The Fever are also seeing complete sellouts of their games. This has helped the WNBA earn more and bring popularity to other players as well. But Reese and Carter don’t seem to think so.

Reese, in a recent interview with WGN News (h/t: Sportsnet), was caught trying to undermine the importance of Clark and brighten up her own name. She enunciated that people weren’t watching women’s basketball “just because of one person. It’s because of me, too. I want y’all to realize that.” Previously, in one of her Threads statuses, Chennedy Carter enumerated that Clark brings only her signature three-pointers to the table, and nothing more than that.
One moment that was missed by many was when Carter and Reese were anticipating a pass, and Reese overtook Clark while the latter fell to the ground. Though it was a completely fair move, does it point to the bias that Reese has against Clark? She has certainly been miffed with Clark ever since the two clashed in the NCAA 2022–23 Finale. Remember the ‘John Cena’s You Can’t See Me’ move?
Perhaps now, Carter might put an end to this issue, especially with her head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon, coming forward. and releasing a statement regarding Carter shoving Clark. Though it looks logical when Reese speaks ill of Clark since both are of the same draft and have been contenders, Carter getting annoyed with Clark looked completely uncalled for, particularly because Carter is senior to Clark in the WNBA. As for now, fans hope that they will resolve the issue soon.
