Did Chennedy Carter go too far, or was her reaction justified in the heat of the game?

“She understands” is what the Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said when Chennedy Carter hip-checked Caitlin Clark. This is the promise the head coach made once again when she hit Jewell Loyd. And once again after that. However, seems like while the star guard is leading the league in fast break points, she is also in flagrant fouls.

The Connecticut Sun hosted the Sky tonight in the Mohegan Sun Arena as Marina Mabrey faced her former team for the first time. But the reunion did not go as expected. With 2:18 left in the first quarter, Mabrey was going for a layup while the Sky star was on her. As soon as the Sun’s new addition spun around to get the ball into the basketball, Chennedy Carter hit the New Jersey native.

The referee standing in front of them immediately called for Flagrant-1. A review was also done for the confirmed call. Marina Mabrey consequently went to the strip to hit one of the two free throws.

Unfortunately for Chicago, this is Chennedy Carter’s fourth such foul with 2 disqualifications already. Previously, her hit at Caitlin Clark broke the internet. Then, her attack on Jewell Loyd was not loved by the Seattle fans either. Moreover, her troubled history with flagrant fouls saw her former team, the Atlanta Dream, suspend her in 2021. The reason given by then was detrimental conduct that affected the team.

However, Mabrey does not have much to say about the same.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Chennedy Carter go too far, or was her reaction justified in the heat of the game?

Have an interesting take?

Going into the second half, Mabrey had 15 points. This was the highest number in the game then. Certainly, she took the game personally, coming in to be a better teammate for the Suns. Talking in the sideline interview, she said, “Last game, I just didn’t bring what the team needed. Didn’t have enough energy. So, I just wanted to come in and give them all I could because they find me and they are such great teammates. So, I just want to come out and do my best.”

Mabrey he did not even mention the flagrant, nor did she show any signs of it all. However, she has been responding with her game. Still, she had a few praises for the Sky’s star guard. She said, “On one-on-ones, we gotta help each other because they are great one-on-one players, especially Chennedy. So, she’s a force and we need to help each other.”

Seems like Teresa Weatherspoon has more questions to answer as we can expect the flagrant foul to be one of the most asked questions in the postgame presser. As for the game, Chicago gave Connecticut a run for their money, breaking their sweat in their own home, though incurring a 80-82 loss by the last 5 seconds.
