LSU’s Tigers have attracted new talent and raised expectations. Their legendary coach Kim Mulkey lately discussed the incoming talent, and how her team has changed SEC sports. Her statement has indeed challenged the ‘point gawd’ status of the legendary Chelsea Gray. The head of the Aces has always regarded Gray as an underrated player. Her teammates, including A’ja Wilson, have admitted that Gray is the leader of their squad. She has been incredible with triple-doubles and averaged the highest of 40 points in 30 minutes.

Since she was drafted as the 11th pick in 2014, Gray has proven herself to be one of the most progressive players in the league. But the recent addition of Kim Mulkey to her team is expected to surpass Gray with her point guard abilities.

When Hailey Van Lith announced her transfer to LSU, it was a shocking surprise to the basketball community. Lith transferred from the University of Louisville after three successful seasons, taking advantage of the extra COVID year provided by the NCAA. Angel Reese welcomed her new teammate with a heartfelt welcome note, and the transfer has spiked expectations for another trophy.

Kim Mulkey discussed the Van Lith move in a YouTube interview. She stated that she recruited her since LSU does not have any point guards, but she wanted to express herself more than that. “When I recruited Haley out of the portal, it wasn’t just, Hey, I need you to come be our point guard.”

Kim claims that she has players like Alexis Morris, Last-Tear Poa, and Kateri Poole who can play all-guard. But she wants Hailey to excel at point guard and return to off-guard responsibilities, which she excels at. “What Hailey wanted when she came here was for me to teach her the point guard position and for her to be able to do both.”

Will Hailey Van Lith be able to surpass ‘Gray’?

Hailey Van Lith has found a great mentor in Kim Mulkey, as she sees her younger self in Van Lith. With Alexis Morris graduating, the addition of Van Lith to the team is crucial for their quest to greatness. Van Lith has been performing exceptionally well, averaging 19.7 points, 3.2 assists, and four rebounds per game. However, it remains to be seen if she can challenge Chelsea Gray.
