Did Cameron Brink make the right call by stepping out of Stephen Curry's shadow for her career?

The Stanford Cardinal witnessed the rise of a superstar last season – Cameron Brink. Brink however turned a lot of heads when she decided not to sign with Under Armour but went ahead with New Balance. For the unversed, Under Armour has a lot of influence of her god brother Stephen Curry. Curry had signed a deal with the company and they have been working together since 2013. However, when it came to endorsements and the NIL deal, Brink did not choose to capitalize with Under Armour but instead went with a $5.3 Billion Worth Brand – New Balance.

That decision now has yielded results as NB signed a deal with the WNBA and became its official partner on Tuesday. The same was announced on the Social media handles of the brand. As per the new deal NB aims to “create authentic broadcast, digital & retail content featuring WNBA rookie Cameron Brink,” as per Nick DePaula. The reason behind their decision might have been that Brink had already signed a deal with the sporting goods company and hence she was preferred over other athletes since the brand had an experience of working with her. “We are proud to announce our official partnership with the @wnba,” NB’s official Instagram handle posted.

New Balance will not be alone in this pursuit. It will be joining brands such as Adidas, Nike, Puma, and Under Armour as the WNBA’s official partner. Though the brands are not the official sneaker partners for the league, they are allowed to display their logos on the court. This might shift the trend towards New Balance since the shoe industry in basketball is dominated by Nike, Jordan, Adidas, and Puma. New Balance signing the deal with WNBA means the company will get to endorse more of their products and if the platform is utilized they might convert a significant market share. This would have brought good news for Brink.

Brink is suffering from an ACL tear from her game against the Connecticut Sun in mid-June at the Mohegan Sun Arena. She could only ply her trade for four minutes before injuring herself. She has been sidelined for the rest of the season. Overall, it was a crucial year for her since she was the second overall pick and was also dominating the league with 5.3 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Under Armour is already a WNBA partner hence it is a win-win situation for both brands and Brink. And also for Curry who has a brand with them.

Under Armour is already a league partner and has been collaborating with Curry since 2013. The duo also launched the Curry brand in 2020. The new brand had the objective of making sports accessible to every budding athlete. Hence, it is a purpose-led performance brand and has since then made inroads into the sneaker industry with its shoes.

To advance its objective, the company also announced its commitment to sports and is working on tackling challenges met by young people in choosing and playing their favourite sport. Thus it aims to provide more opportunities to every aspiring athlete and has set 2030 as the target.
