Caitlin Clark vs. Allisha Gray: Who's the real three-point queen of the WNBA?

The WNBA All-Star Friday Night just became a Dream affair. On a historic evening, Atlanta’s eight-year WNBA veteran Allisha Gray turned out to be the star of the show as she became the first player to conquer both the Kia Skills Challenge and the STARRY 3-Point Contest on the same night. This emphatic statement took place when her 22 points in the final round of the 3-Point Contest proved just enough to take home a total of $115,150. However, the competition also marked the absence of one of the most prolific names in 3-point shooting, Caitlin Clark.

As a result, this has paved the way for numerous discussions as to who among the two is more capable of connecting from beyond the arc. Luckily, we have some numbers which lay significant grounds for this comparison.

As a rookie, Caitlin Clark has managed to set multiple benchmarks. And one of them is right up her alley. Being regarded as the female version of the Golden State Warriors golden boy Stephen Curry, the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer lived up to the hype she created for her deep and long-range shots. So far, her 26 games have resulted in a total of 71 3-PM (32.7%) which places her 3rd overall in the league alongside Arike Ogunbowale and Kelsey Plum.

The 22-year-old only needs 15 more threes to surpass Rhyne Howard’s record of most 3PM in a season as a rookie. If she maintains her current rate of 2.7 threes per game, Clark will end the season with 109 3PM. On the other hand, Gray currently ranks 15th in the WNBA in terms of 3-pointers made.

In her 24 games so far, Allisha Gray is 41 of 114 which gives her an accuracy of 36%. In terms of 3PT FG%, Gray is better than Clark. But we also have to take into consideration the types of shots both these stars usually take. While Clark often struggles to get open looks due to the defensive pressure, Gray is more of a catch-and-shoot player. So far, in her professional career, Gray has made 300 of 856 from beyond the arc, holding an efficiency of 35%.

In terms of volume, Clark easily takes the cake. However, Gray shoots with a better efficiency. Nonetheless, the volume of shots attempted from beyond the arc and considering the defense on both these stars, Clark is better than Gray. The Dream star’s Friday Night outing during the All-Star Weekend will say otherwise, though. But how do these two compare overall in their careers?

One common thread established between both these phenomenal athletes was that they were the first-round picks in their respective drafts. If there has to be another, the resonance can be drawn in the long-range shooting potential as both Clark and Gray made quite a reputation in that regard.

The 2× USBWA National Player of the Year, in her 4 seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, landed 548 out of her 1452 total attempts. This compiles an overall average of 37.7%. As for Allisha Gray, her college career accounted for 3 years in which she played 108 games. During this, she was 155 of 445 from beyond the arc while maintaining a conversion rate of 34.8%.

Hardly anyone would argue that both these names carry a phenomenal range of skills. This is evident by the multiple times both of them have delivered whenever the occasion demanded. Still, fans will be eager to witness a rivalry between them from the 3-point range.
