Are Indiana Fever fans truly the 'nastiest' or the 'greatest' in the WNBA?

Who can forget DiJonai Carrington, the one who poked Caitlin Clark in the eye during Game 1 of the WNBA playoffs? While this popularity might look fortunate for the reigning Most Improved Player of the Year, it has its own misfortunes. Long before the playoffs, in a regular season game, she had called out Indiana fans. However, now that her former coach, Stephanie White, has taken up the position of head coach with the Fever, White praised the fans. And as is natural, the Indiana loyalists have come back at Carrington to make her taste a bitter medicine.

“From being called “the nastiest fans in the W” to Stephanie White saying the Indiana Fever fans are “the greatest basketball fans in the world” DiJonai Carrington tried taking her eye so Caitlin Clark took her coach,” one fan commented as White and the Indiana Fever announced the head coaching decision on Friday.

“I am incredibly proud and honored to return home to Indiana and lead the Fever during such a pivotal moment in this franchise’s history, as well as during during such an important time throughout women’s athletics. This franchise has and always will be committed to winning and I look forward to working every day to help deliver another WNBA title to the greatest basketball fans in the world,” White had notably stated during her homecoming pointing out that the Fever fans were “greatest basketball fans in the world.”

Notably, Carrington had mistakenly poked Clark in the eye during Game 1 of the WNBA playoffs which led to the blue eye for the rookie. Following this, the No. 22 could only score 2 of 13 three-pointers. This shocked her fans as the single-season assists leader is known for her logo threes and had the highest number of threes during the 2024 season (122), standing only next to Sabrina Ionescu in the highest single-season threes list.

Meanwhile, the Fever suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Sun who eventually made it to the Championship Finale. But the Carrington-Clark controversy did not stop there.

When Carrington was asked if she had purposefully hurt Clark, she outright denied it. “I don’t even know why I would intend to hit anybody in the eye. That doesn’t even make sense to me,” Carrington stated. The Des Moines-born also did the same. She absolved the 26-year-old of any guilt by enumerating that “It wasn’t intentional by any means, just watch the play.”

However, when further pressed Carrington and her Indiana Fever girlfriend NaLyssa Smith seemed to have a crack at it, which led the reporter Christine Brennan to feel as if it was done on purpose. And since then, Clark fans have been giving a hard time to the Connecticut Sun guard. And with White calling them the “greatest basketball fans in the world,” Clark’s admirers once again jumped to slam her.

Caitlin Clark’s admirers mock DiJonai Carrington

“I know Dijonai Carrington is upset right now because she said fever had the nastiness fan base just for her coach Stephanie White to be the New Head Coach for Indiana Fever,” another fan stated. The user was pointing out that while a few months ago, Clark’s fans were being tagged as the nastiest to exist, now her head coach White herself is calling them the best, which maybe washes away all the allegations against them.

“Bring DiJonai with you,” another Fever fan sarcastically took a dig at Carrington, expounding that she too should come to Indiana with her coach. Maybe they were referring to the Fever’s upcoming season run. Perhaps, according to them, it would get Carrington something she couldn’t have this year.

“You mean that time CC²² hit that triple in Dijonai’s face. Ew!🤣😭,” another user recounted that the former Hawkeye has also hit her signature deep shots while the Sun star was guarding her.

“That’s why Stephanie White didn’t speak up for Dijonai the entire season. I’m sure her former players feel great about that comment, lol,” another follower pointed out. When Carrington was in trouble with the Fever fans, White hadn’t spoken about her horrors. Instead, White had continued to support her since her meeting with Clark, even when the Iowa-alum was new to the W and faltering. Thus, fans speculated whether White had known the possibility of being with Indiana since the beginning.

She literally has her hands on Dijonai‘s neck,” another fan stated that White’s move to Indiana means, metaphorically, Clark has her hand on Carrington’s neck.

It remains to be seen how Carrington will react to this. And furthermore, how she will treat Clark the next time they meet on the court.
