Has Caitlin Clark already surpassed some of the WNBA's biggest stars with her latest performance?

Just by being a rookie, Caitlin Clark has brought a one-of-a-kind revolution straight to the WNBA’s very core and set an unprecedented transformation in motion. When most is lost in the transition from college to the pros for several players, the Fever rookie has maintained, and more so successfully elevated her status to a career-defining level.

During her college basketball days at Iowa, Caitlin Clark’s legacy has been nothing short of a trailblazing record smasher. Drafted as the first-overall pick, the 6-ft guard has continued her charisma with her superb court vision and ball-handling skills. Since she arrived in the W, Clark has been expanding her role beyond just making deep shots. Although it took her some time to set the tone, she has been changing the game with her on and off-the-ball efforts. Emerging as one of the most impactful WNBA players, Caitlin Clark has made her mark and propelled herself above the league’s brightest stars. Let’s talk about it in detail.

In the first week of July, Caitlin Clark etched her name in WNBA history, becoming the first-ever rookie to register a triple-double by scoring 19 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds. Having a swift hand in amassing points and dimes, it was Clark’s 10th rebound in the mid-fourth quarter of the game that hitched the record under her belt.

Similar to the league, it was the first triple-double in the history of the Indiana Fever as well. As for Clark, she had 17 triple-doubles throughout her college basketball career and, more so, the Hawkeyes won all those 17 matchups. What only added to the celebrations was Fever avoiding a season sweep by the league’s top team — the New York Liberty.

“Obviously, it’s cool. My teammates have been finishing the ball [at a] really, really high rate. My assist numbers, that’s because of them,” said Clark after the win. Significant as it was, the game was pivotal for the Fever as that night they shot down their nine-game losing streak.

“I’m just happy we won. I take a lot of pride in being able to do a lot of different things for this team. I think we’re really good when I can get the ball off the glass and just go in transition and find my teammates and set them up,” Clark further elaborated on how she engages with her teammates on the court while making plays. But, as always, there is a lot more in store for Clark as she doubled down on this feat by clinching the ball after Kia Nurse’s 3-pointer attempt in the closing seconds of the Fever’s recent 93-86 victory against the LA Sparks.

With the second triple-double of her professional career, she has joined the ranks of just a handful of WNBA stars to achieve the stat line. However, this isn’t the only feat that Clark has accomplished as a WNBA rookie.

Clark’s growing accolades as a rookie

The 28th iteration of the WNBA season has seen one of the many firsts. The Indiana Fever rookie, Caitlin Clark, has made most of them possible. Alongside her career’s second triple-double (most by a rookie ever,) Clark also became the fastest player in the league’s history to reach 100 3-pointers in a single season. Indeed, a huge milestone in its own right. She surpassed Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream in this feat.

To achieve this, Clark made her second 3-point shot of the game during the third quarter. Down the stretch, she added 2 more shots from beyond the arc, finishing the game 4-of-10 from deep. Also, this accomplishment has placed her as the fifth WNBA player to have multiple triple-doubles in a single season. Hence, she inked her name with players like Alyssa Thomas, Courtney Williams, Sabrina Ionescu, and Candace Parker.

And it is needless to mention that Clark is leading the WNBA in both average (8.4 apg) and total assists with 286 and counting. Besides, there are several on and off-court records that Clark has set and surpassed, making her one of the most influential athletes in the league right now.
