Could an Iowa Hawkeyes reunion with Caitlin Clark spark a new era of women's sports camaraderie?

With the Indiana Fever knocked out of the WNBA playoffs by the Connecticut Sun, it’s chill time for Caitlin Clark. From taking to the lush greens with her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, for a game of golf to reviewing drinks at the local Swig Drinks with Fever teammate Lexie Hull, the unwind schedule goes hard. But does an Iowa Hawkeyes reunion fit in her offseason plans, or maybe an Iowa x Fever crossover?

On Friday night, Las Vegas Aces’ Kate Martin (ex-Iowa captain) and Iowa alum Gabbie Marshall, who is pursuing her master’s degree from North Carolina, reunited after a long time. After Martin picked up her former teammate from the airport, they headed straight to school to surprise Iowa junior, Jada Gyamfi, who teared up on seeing them show up at her door unannounced. On coming across this heartwarming video on Marshall’s TikTok, fans were left wanting more with Caitlin Clark in the picture as well.

While that is yet to pan out, the Indiana star made a remote appearance a few hours later. When Marshall and Gyamfi went live on TikTok, presumably from the latter’s dorm room, Clark showed up in the comments, asking them to add Lexie Hull. While Marshall pinned her comment, the request went unfulfilled, as Hull made no appearance.

Still, this certainly doesn’t rule out a Hawkeyes reunion in the coming days. And to answer the earlier question, the rate at which Lexie Hull and Caitlin Clark’s friendship is deepening, and Iowa X Fever crossover can be on the cards too. But it definitely won’t be on November 13th because the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer has another sport to excel at.

“I don’t know what I’m gonna do tomorrow. Maybe play some golf,” Caitlin Clark said on September 25th, after the Connecticut Sun knocked the Indiana Fever out of the playoffs. “I’ll become a professional golfer,” was her humorous aim for the WNBA offseason. To everybody’s surprise, the LPGA’s X page replied, “Count us in, Caitlin Clark”. And only two days after that came an unexpected announcement.

The LPGA announced that the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year would participate in the Wednesday pro-am at the Annika. As the name suggests, the event will be hosted by Annika Sorenstam. “I love golf. So the opportunity to play in the Pro-Am for a tournament with a legend like Annika Sorenstam’s name on it is so exciting,” Clark said in a statement.

This partnership comes as the result of the Indiana Guard being the brand ambassador of Gainbridge, which is also the presenting sponsor for the Annika event. “Gainbridge is a leader in supporting women’s sports and that’s clear through their commitment to me, this event, Billie Jean King, and Parity Week. I’m looking forward to seeing all the LPGA players on the driving range, being part of the Women’s Leadership Summit, and, of course, teeing it up in the pro-am with Annika,” Clark added.

In 2023, the Iowa alum had participated in the pro-am prior to the John Deere Classic in July. Later that year, she also revealed that golf was her escape after the high-pressure basketball seasons and it helped her clear her mind and just be with her friends. But there’s a long month to go before this, and a Hawkeyes reunion is still very much on the cards.
