Caitlin Clark's ROTY win: Is she the future face of women's basketball?

The Caitlin Clark mania continues! Joining teammate Aliyah Boston, the Indiana Fever newbie has just been unanimously voted the Associated Press Rookie of the Year award. The WNBA will announce the official name at a later date, but is there any doubt as to who will win it? Fans have been saying it all year long, and CC’s boyfriend agrees.

Connor McCaffery took to Instagram to share the official announcement from the Indiana Fever on his story, with just the word as his caption: “Duh.” And no kidding indeed! A 15-person panel voted Clark in as the ROTY, and the Fever rookie is expected to take the official title from the W as well.

The Associated Press also included Clark in the AP All-WNBA First Team, which boasts names like A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, and Alyssa Thomas. Not only that, but the former Iowa player is also on the all-rookie team, with names like the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, New York Liberty’s Leonie Fiebich, and Los Angeles Sparks’ Rickea Jackson.

Much like the rest of the league, McCaffery, who has been dating CC since April 2023, is rooting for his girlfriend to win the ROTY over Angel Reese officially as well. The fact that Clark finished fourth in overall MVP voting should be a sign. But interestingly, there was one voter who put the Sky rookie in 4th place as well, although she ended up in the 12th spot overall.

While the Fever rookie has set headlines ablaze with her achievements this year, a recent revelation has given her an interesting connection to her boyfriend’s career as well. McCaffery is the newly appointed assistant on Butler’s men’s basketball team. But once upon a time, he might have chosen a career in baseball.

Had Connor McCaffery gone into baseball, Caitlin Clark could have commentated his games

Once, the  Des Moines Register claimed that Connor McCaffery was “on a good track” to enter the Major League Baseball draft in 2020. However, COVID-19 happened and then McCaffery got injured, so those plans were put on hold. He ultimately went into basketball, and now basketball coaching like his dad. But a hilarious social media post from Lexie Hull showed Caitlin Clark embracing the baseball lover in herself recently.

The Indiana Fever player posted a TikTok of CC heartily commentating on the Phillies vs Brewers game from her hotel room. It caught the attention of both the MLB and WNBA world, with Clark even commenting on her teammate’s post, “@Phillies hire me?” And as it turns out, both teams actually posted offers to Clark the next day to join them as a play-by-play commenter for a game!

The Fever rookie had said that she followed the Phillies a little and last month, Clark and McCaffery had visited Yankee Stadium in jerseys. While Clark clicked pictures with Anthony Rizzo and captain Aaron Judge, her shirt actually had Juan Soto’s 22 on it!

As for the commentary, the Fever guard said later that she had just been doing it for fun and didn’t know Hull had been recording at first. But just in case her WNBA career doesn’t pan out, or it does and she’s looking for a new job later on, Caitlin Clark can join the broadcaster’s booth at MLB games!
