For the third time this season, the Aces took over the rookie-led Indiana. The game turned out to be a total bust for the Fever. Plus, Caitlin Clark failed to deliver what the fans came to witness. While on the other hand, A’ja Wilson struck down a single-season feat.
In today’s game, things took a turn southwards as not only did the Aces limit Clark’s scoring to 16 points, but they also made it difficult to make passes. Hence, with just 6 assists, Clark failed to surpass the much-anticipated Alyssa Thomas’ WNBA single-season assists record, falling 5 assists shy.
However, A’ja Wilson, who was sitting at 929 points before the game, surpassed Jewell Loyd’s 439 and set a new WNBA single-season scoring record at 956. She registered 27 points on 11-of-28 shooting to cross Loyd’s mark way ahead. Moreover, she added 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks to her stat line. But in the next game, merriments will be for Wilson as she is set to become the first player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 points in a year.

Needless to say, Clark and Wilson have been on an individual record-breaking path this season. But tonight was for Wilson. Though Clark is still leading the league in assists with 312, one of the weaker categories for Wilson herself with just 82.
WNBA stat watch (THREAD):
– A’ja Wilson needs 11 points to set a new regular season record (Wilson – 929, Jewell Loyd (2023) – 939)
– Caitlin Clark needs 11 assists to set a new regular season record (Clark – 306, Alyssa Thomas (2023) – 316)— Across the Timeline (@WBBTimeline) September 11, 2024
So, now, everyone’s attention will be on the next game, which is again against the Aces on Saturday.
Caitlin Clark and Co. failed to learn from last week’s loss
After the 99-88 defeat against the Minnesota Lynx, Kelsey Mitchell mentioned the room for improvement for the Fever, especially on the defensive end. “I think that we can get better, from what you saw today, based on those down the stretch, getting those stops and getting those next rebounds, we got to be better. And I think that’s our next maturation defensively,” she had said.
As for Clark, she was astonished by the Lynx moves, “Honestly, I think they’re the hardest team to guard. I think their movement is incredible. The way they play is incredible. It’s how basketball should be played.”
Today as well, they couldn’t defend the Aces, letting on 44.3% from the field, alongside just 3 blocks and 4 steals. Moreover, Clark couldn’t keep up with her game, scoring 16 points, from 6 of 22 field goals, and just 1 of 10 from beyond the arc. Aliyah Boston grabbed 10 boards but was limited to just 6 points.
