Caitlin Clark's off-season plans at Connor McCaffery's new workplace—supportive girlfriend or distraction?

Connor McCaffery is headed to Butler, and Caitlin Clark couldn’t be more proud! While they may not be in the Indiana basketball family together anymore, celebrations are definitely in order. The Fever rookie expressed her pride and happiness for her boyfriend’s new job on her Instagram yesterday. And in a recent interview, Clark revealed how she plans to support McCaffery and the Bulldogs in her offseason.

“I’m super excited for him. Obviously, his basketball knowledge is pretty good,” Clark smiled. “It makes it fun, you can bounce ideas off of each other, so yeah, just super proud. He works super hard for that and yeah, it’ll be fun to go to those games. I mean, I love college basketball. Obviously, he’s been around it his whole life and invested a lot into it.”

McCaffery is the son of legendary coach Fran McCaffery, currently serving as head coach for the men’s basketball team at the University of Iowa, Clark’s alma mater. Before coming to Butler, Connor had been working as a team assistant for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers. But revealing that coaching newer players was what he ultimately wanted to do, Connor McCaffery’s career path is exciting for his girlfriend as well.

“I think it’ll be fun, give me something to do throughout the offseason as well, something to root for,” the Fever star continued. But Caitlin Clark makes sure to pay homage to both of their alma mater in Iowa. “It’s definitely “Go Hawks” for sure as well,” Clark laughed.

Meanwhile, when a reporter asked if the basketball couple had time together in the gym or the courts, Clark revealed, “Yeah I mean obviously that’s something we’ve always kind of shared that bond with…coming in here, shooting late at night, having some shooting competitions against each other. I definitely outshoot him more than he outshoots me but he likes to think otherwise.”

The couple has been dating since April 2023 and can often be found posting about each other on social media, be it anniversaries or birthdays. But while the love of his life is rooting for his career choice, one woman in McCaffery’s life wants him to find something else.

Despite Caitlin Clark’s support, Connor McCaffery’s mom “didn’t want him to go into coaching”

“It’s a way in,” Connor McCaffery said to the ‘Des Moines Register’ last year. “It’s an entry-level job. You’ve got to work hard and work your way up. That’s obviously what I want to do.” Being around basketball all his life, McCaffery wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps and stay around the hoops.

And yet, his mom Margaret wanted him to do something with his dual college degree in finance and political science. She told ‘Sports Illustrated’ in 2023, “Selfishly, that’s why I didn’t want him to go into coaching. It’s excruciating to watch my husband. I don’t anticipate it will be way better watching my son.”

One could argue that there are ups and downs in every career path. Before basketball, Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend had also been a baseball player. But the COVID-19 pandemic ruined those plans. It seems basketball was made for the McCaffery family and might not go out of their DNA anytime soon.

And after all, who doesn’t want to continue a parent’s legacy if they have the ability and talent to?
