Can Breanna Stewart lead Team USA to another gold in Paris, or is the competition too fierce?

There was no hint of doubt for Team USA when the roster was announced. From the very beginning, they knew what their goal was. The eighth straight gold, winning every game. While we always thought that was it, Breanna Stewart’s words definitely put a period on the train. It only gets more special with the Liberty icon coming out as the most reliable shooter in the squad.

After the Team USA was announced, Breanna Stewart had a few words to spare. The Players’ Tribune shared a video of the reigning WNBA MVP talking about her target. They captioned the tweet, “@breannastewart had one goal in mind from the beginning. 😏USA Women’s Basketball advance to the gold medal game for the eighth straight time! @TeamUSA|@usabasketball| #Olympics.”

In the clip, she said, “To be a part of Team USA, basketball legacy is something that is incredibly important to me because this is now going to be my third Olympics. We are going for eight straight Olympic gold medals. Making sure we continue to be great, elevate the game, and appreciate the ones who have got us here to this point.”

The Team USA head coach Cheryl Reeve praised Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson in Phoenix. And the two are surely paying her back. “It is incredible how much those two have improved every year, have added something. It’s incredible the levels that they both play at,” she had said, speaking about the two filling in for Sue Bird’s absence. Since then, we have seen this duo come up with every way to dominate in the tournament. In five games so far, they have been the scoring leaders for the team.

After her semifinal win over Australia, Breanna Stewart made an appearance for NBA Today. Talking about the gold, she said, “It is the standard with USA basketball, and everyone knows it. The goal is gold.” She has accumulated 90 points so far off the USA’s total of 449. This makes up to 20% of the total score in five games. Incredible is quite a word for her loyalty to the team.

As for herself, she is currently the leading frontrunner in the Olympic MVP race, followed by A’ja Wilson at the third spot. While becoming the MVP of the world can be quite a catch, we know that Breanna Stewart has worked for all of it. Next, they face France on Sunday to end their quest for the tenth gold.
