The New York Liberty have certainly beaten many odds this season to sit at the top of the league standings. However, with six games remaining, they’re determined not to let the second-place Minnesota Lynx close in on that coveted leading seed. To keep the distance, they’ll need to conquer tonight’s opponent — the Las Vegas Aces — the very team that haunted them last season in the Finals. Luckily for New York, it seems like Breanna Stewart has a well-tested strategy up her sleeve for just that.
When the Liberty forward recently had a chat with the NY Liberty Fan TV, she detailed what could be their game plan against A’ja Wilson and the Aces. “I think that one of the biggest takeaways last time we played them, we were really like rebounding the hell out of the ball. And I think that in most games when we do boards like that, not only defense but get a lot of offensive boards, we get extra chance extra possessions,” stated Stewart.

This will be the third and last time when they will face each other in the regular season. Their last encounter saw Stewart’s Liberty come out victorious with 79-67. As the 2x MVP noted, the key to that victory was their dominance on the boards, pulling down 46 total rebounds, including 13 on the offensive end. Stewie had 18 points and 7 boards in her name that night.
She also mentioned, “And being the aggressors, you know, I am being confident when we’re open from the outside, getting downhill to getting to the free throw line, making sure it’s our style and our tempo serves the game.” Well, if Stewart’s game plan comes together, the Liberty could finish the regular season with total dominance over the reigning 2x champions.
Breanna Stewart’s strategy can sweep out Las Vegas Aces
When Stewart and her squad hit the court tonight, they’ll have a golden opportunity to boost their confidence and team morale heading into the playoffs. Last year’s Finals heartbreak, dealt by none other than the Aces, is still fresh. But this season, the Liberty have been on a redemption mission. New York has already snatched the wins twice over Las Vegas this season and will be going for a season sweep.

While discussions have already covered the Liberty’s victory after the All-Star break, they first clashed with the Aces back in June. Still stinging from the 2023 Finals loss, Stewart’s squad took the win with a 90-82 score, despite A’ja Wilson putting up 21 points for her team. However, Sandy Brondello’s unit can’t afford to underestimate the Aces this time around, especially with them riding a four-game winning streak. Adding to their threat is Wilson,
who’s been in phenomenal form, recently racking up two games with over 40 points.ADVERTISEMENT

Yet, the Liberty is also star-studded, led by Breanna Stewart, who also has been dominant this season. She is averaging 20.3 points per game. Although it’s hard to say if Stewie’s well-honed strategy will be the deciding factor, one thing’s for sure, tonight’s matchup promises to be more than just a game for the top-seeded New York. The stage is set for an epic showdown at the Barclays Center.
