Fresh off from a month-long vacation, things are going extremely well for Caitlin Clark & Co. after returning to the court. Registering two consecutive wins against the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm, Clark has touched yet another milestone. The Indiana Fever’s 92-75 win over the Storm last night turned into a double celebration as Clark broke the WNBA single-season rookie mark in assists.
In the game, she had 23 points and 5 rebounds, but most importantly, she dished out 9 assists to reach a total of 232 assists, surpassing the 1998 WNBA draft No. 2 pick for the Sacramento Monarchs, Ticha Penicheiro’s rookie record of 224 assists.
Showering their love on this record-breaking milestone, Clark’s former and current teammates, including Gabbie Marshall, Aliyah Boston, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Lexie Hull alongside the WNBA legend Lisa Leslie lined up their praises. In an Instagram post shared by the Fever’s No.22 with the caption, “Fev Show Is Back,” Lisa Leslie seemed to agree as she wrote, “Yessss!” feeling the return of the Fever vibe.

“A record that stood since 1998. And you come here and you break it. Super proud of you. I know the work that you put in. A lot of people always talked about your shooting. I was always mesmerized about your passing, your court vision, and how you make your teammates better. So this record is in great hands. And continue to do what you do, continue to elevate your game and the women’s game and the WNBA. Congratulations. Super proud of you,” Penicheiro sent a heartfelt message to Clark after the game.
Penicheiro was making waves with her passing skills even before Clark was born, but the two did connect during Clark’s college career at Iowa. She is regarded as one of the most creative and exhilarating passers in the history of women’s basketball. As Clark puts it, Penicheiro had more flair to her game, making crazy passes.
As for Clark, passing is undoubtedly one of her top attributes as a player. If we look back, it is evident from her Division I scoring where she not only became the all-time leading scorer (men’s and women’s) but also ranked third in the NCAA Division I history amassing 1144 assists.

Moreover, it took Penicheiro 30 games to set this record, which Clark has broken in her 28th WNBA game, a crazy feat in its own right. Now, Clark still has 12 games left to add to her total assists in her WNBA rookie season, so something great around the corner is guaranteed to be waiting to shine the light on Clark once again!
