A nervous mother came to watch her daughter Angel Reese when she was recording her 10th consecutive double-double in the WNBA and setting history. Though Candace Parker had 12 double-doubles, it was between the end of 2011, and going into the 2012 season. Thus when Reese scored off a free throw against the Minnesota Lynx in July to inch closer to the record, her mom, present in the stands, breathed a sigh of relief. And if there’s one defining moment that shows how supportive Angel Webb Reese has been of her daughter, it is this. So naturally, when the ‘Chi-Town Barbie’ was present in an interview recently, she didn’t shy away from thanking her mother.

A sentimental Reese admitted the crucial role her mother played in her life on Tuesday’s Chicago Sky interview, the snippets of which were posted on ‘Chicago State of Mind Sports’. And fans also got emotional while listening to her story.

“Obviously my mom kind of made it known that I wouldn’t be able to go to college without being able to even on a scholarship. So I kind of was in a mindset where I have to go get it regardless coz I wanted these things in my life. Luckily, I was blessed to be able to get an athletic scholarship, an academic scholarship to school and then continue my journey and she kind of made me become an independent woman because we didn’t have we didn’t have all the luxury growing up,” Reese stated.

Reese was born on May 6, 2002, in Randallstown, Maryland to Michael and Webb Reese. The now 22-year-old had basketball skills in her genes as her father played the sport for Boston College before moving to Loyola University, whereas her mother plied her trade for the University of Maryland before trying her hand at the pro level in Luxembourg. Thus, it is no surprise that Reese and her brother both grew up to inherit that talent. However, the concerning thing was that Angel’s father didn’t take care of the kids who were raised by a single mom.

“I mean we didn’t grow up poor but we didn’t grow up where we had all the money and everything was given to us so I kind of got into a mindset where I have to grind I have to do this now and I like look back at it like it was all worth it. There were days I didn’t want to get up and go to practice and go to school and have to do those things and knowing that I like always appreciate the way I was raised because I’ll always be humble just be able to know like this was not just given to me I had to actually really really work for it,” Reese concluded.

Reese didn’t have all the means necessary to excel in life. Hence, when Angel got a scholarship to the college, she considered it a payback to her mother. “My mom wouldn’t have been able to pay for college for me,” she admitted in one of her interviews. Meanwhile, her father was not present during her journey and not many details are known about him. Maybe it was these strained ties that got Webb Reese to step up for her daughter. And now when Angel is enjoying the success, her mother definitely deserves to be credited for it.

While we have seen many instances of the mother-daughter duo both on and off the court, their chemistry is simply magical to see. However, this is not the first time that Reese has publicly thanked her mother.

Angel Reese appreciates her mother

During the run to the NCAA Championship title in 2024, Reese partnered up with Goldman Sachs to spread awareness about financial literacy for black women. In the ad, the former NCAA Champion thanked her mother for instilling “in me my confidence, work ethic and my commitment to my community.” The ‘One Million Black Women‘ campaign aims to impact the lives of at least 1 million women of color by 2030. In the advertisement for the American Banking mogul, she introduced her mother, thanking her for joining hands alongside the No. 5 on the Sky roster with Goldman Sachs for the big movement.

Additionally, Reese also revealed that she “owe(s) so much to my mom.” Webb Reese’s loving and protective side was visible when during an altercation against Flau’jae Johnson’s mother last year, she chose to stand up for her daughter. Over the years, as the Baltimore native has faced wrath from many, one person has been constant for her, that is her mother. From stepping up in her college days to watching her daughter climb up to the stage of the 2024 WNBA draft as a seventh-overall pick, the mother has shown strength, courage, and most of all, confidence in her daughter.

And hopefully, Webb Reese will listen to this interview too. And perhaps, she will also express her love for Angel, who needs it all the more after going through a season-ending injury.
