Angel Reese or Caitlin Clark—who's the real future of the WNBA?

Double-doubles became a staple for Angel Resse during her time at LSU. But what most people did not anticipate was how that would translate into the more aggressive professional league. Still, getting 21 such games proves that she is much more than what people think of her. Since her immaculate feat of leaving Candace Parker behind, many compared the Sky rookie to the Pistons and Bulls legend Dennis Rodman. Now, as she continues to stack up those boards, she created more history, giving a tough challenge to Caitlin Clark in the ROTY race.

With Chicago Sky’s matchup against Las Vegas into the books, Angel Reese became the only WNBA player to have three consecutive games with 20+ boards. If that was not enough, she is even competing against the greats in the NBA. She became one of only two players in the last 50 years to record these numbers. There, only Ben Wallace has managed to achieve this feat since Wilt Chamberlain in 1973.

It is important to note that the Hall of Famer was on the brink of his retirement as he left the Los Angeles Lakers in the very same year to become a coach in the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadors. Contrastingly, Angel Reese has only begun her career in the WNBA. Still, she has left no stone unturned when it comes to helping her team on the glass.

On the other hand, Caitlin Clark led her team to another win and has also tied the rookie record for most three-pointers with 85. The feat matches Rhyne Howard’s, against who, the Fever rookie dropped 4 shots from deep. While the former Iowa sensation is leading the league in assists, Angel Reese is doing so on the boards. And it’s her responsibility, as she says.

Although the Sky rookie is a great addition to Chicago’s defense, her field goal slump is hurting the team. Currently, she is only 38.7% from the field. This number is quite low for a post player who takes a majority of the shots just a few feet away from the basket. Still, seems like Angel Reese does not worry about her weaknesses.

Talking about her ability to collect boards, she has said, “I just go out there and do my job. My job is to rebound, so I’m going to go out there and do my job and rebound. I know that’s what my teammates need me to do, and I’ve committed to do that.” She currently averages 13.5 points and 12.9 rebounds. Despite the Illinois-based team not having the best starts to the second half of the season, seems like the former Lady Tiger has turned her game face on in the paint.

With her improving numbers on the boards, she is also making history in the league as no other player has ever given as high a rebounding rate as she currently is. While she does need to work on her shooting, seems like where she is, is already enough to break a leg for Caitlin Clark as the season soon comes to an end and we will have our Rookie of the Year.
