Angel Reese's reaction to seeing Teresa Weatherspoon—proof that true mentorship lasts a lifetime?

After a series of setbacks, Teresa Weatherspoon, the Hall of Famer, appeared at Barclays Center to catch on the Game 2 between the New York Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces. Despite not making it to the playoffs and being let go from her coaching position, she didn’t hold back from supporting those who did. Seeing this warm side of the former head coach, T-Spoon, Angel Reese couldn’t hold back either.

On Tuesday, October 1st, she took to her official Twitter account and posted a pair of sad emoji with a heart while reposting a clip in which the arena honored Teresa Weatherspoon’s arrival. For Reese, it’s the bond she has formed throughout the season with T-Spoon that keeps her connected. But this isn’t the first time Reese has gotten emotional over TSpoon.

A couple of days ago, when the official announcement from the Chicago Sky about parting ways with T-Spoon was made, Reese was the first to respond. “I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life,” Chi-Town Barbie said in her X post.

Ever since being drafted as the No. 7 pick this season, the 22-year-old Maryland native had the opportunity to train under T-Spoon, leading to an unwavering bond between the two. Over the year, T-Spoon, who played an impressive eight seasons in the WNBA, helped the Sky establish a unique identity. Particularly impressive is the rookie forward who leads the league with a 13.1 rebounding average, not just as a rookie, but as a WNBA player. Impressive, right?

But still, all this wasn’t enough for the Sky to keep Weatherspoon

The Chicago Sky finished 13-27 this season, with a questionable three wins after a month-long Olympic break. Despite the setbacks, they were just one step away from making the playoffs but ultimately didn’t make it to the postseason. Their injured roster held them back. Reese suffered a hairline fracture in her left wrist, followed by Chennedy Carter and Kamilla Cardoso also getting benched with injuries.

How could Weatherspoon succeed with an injured team? Yet, this failure came at a hefty price for her. She was fired from her head coaching position in less than a year. This left Reese “heartbroken,” as she felt Weatherspoon “didn’t deserve this.” She’s right. Since T-Spoon’s hiring last October, she had only faced setbacks.

First, three of the Chicago Sky’s top five scorers under James Wade parted ways by the beginning of 2024. While Courtney Williams and Alanna Smith entered free agency before signing with the Lynx, Kahleah Copper requested to be traded to the Phoenix Mercury. So, in short, Weatherspoon played with the cards she was dealt. Despite that, she remained dedicated throughout the season, motivating those who were available.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, but it wasn’t her fault either. According to Sheryl Swoopes, Weatherspoon will soon speak up on “the people that need to be accountable” for her early departure. Until then, Sky’s on a quest for a new head coach for their team.
