Has Rebekah Gardner officially dethroned Caitlin Clark as the new face of the WNBA?

Fans were divided when Angel Reese did John Cena’s ‘You Can’t See Me’ move against Caitlin Clark during the Championship Finale of the 2022-23 NCAA season. But, that was just the beginning of the rivalry between the two. Once the rookies were drafted into the WNBA, their stardom and growing rivalry marked happier times for the WNBA. From jerseys to ticket sales, the WNBA continues to bask in glory as the two stars provide a fair share of entertainment to fans. However, now that half of the W season has ended, Reese has once again mimed John Cena’s move and this time it will hurt Clark more since it’s done metaphorically.

As per a report by Business Insider, the average WNBA ticket price has grown from $49.50 to $91.88 in the secondary market which hints that fans are excited more than ever to watch the stars in action. And one such stat reveals that Reese’s impact on the Chicago Sky has enveloped Clark’s influence on the Fever fans.

While the average ticket price in the 2023 WNBA for the Indiana Fever was $67, the average price of a Sky game was a few bucks less ($58), as per Business Insider. Clark brought her fans from the NCAA resulting in a cent percent sale of the season inventory and a 264% surge in attendance. Even in the TV viewership, the Fever propelled by Clark made records for the most viewed games on major networks. And how could the average ticket prices then remain the same?

In 2024, the Fever saw an exponential increase in the average ticket prices from $67 to $111, marking a rise of 66% whereas the Sky’s average ticket prices soared from $58 to $156. Thus, the 169% growth in the Sky prices is much higher than that of Fever (66%), which speaks volumes about Reese’s impact on the league. The data from BI included all the games played till July 17 when the league took a month-long break to accommodate the Olympics schedule. These numbers have certainly divided fans once again as the two brought their cumulative impact in the All-Star game.

The 2024 WNBA All-Star game was the highest-viewed All-Star game for the league, with 3.442 million viewers on ABC. The previous best of 1.441 million viewers was easily eclipsed in July this year as Reese and Clark both plied their trades for the All-Star team against Team USA. While many fans believed that this was the pure Clark effect in action, others labeled this a result of Reese’s popularity. To know who has more impact, a look at their WNBA numbers might give us a better view.

Has Rebekah Gardner officially dethroned Caitlin Clark as the new face of the WNBA?

Have an interesting take?

Reese was leading the Rookie of the Year award race with 15 double-doubles initially when she surpassed Candace Parker’s record for most consecutive double-doubles in a season (12). But Clark, who previously looked to be struggling in the W due to physicality, stepped up next to Reese when she scored a triple-double (19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists) during a game in July against the New York Liberty. And since then, there has been no stopping Clark.

The Iowa-alum topped that up with 19 assists against the Dallas Wings just before the Olympics break. Plus, she dished out 10 assists during the WNBA All-Star game. But, if Clark’s performing well, how could Reese be behind? Reese scored her trademark double-double in the All-Star game with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Thus, there is no clear leader when it comes to the ROTY award.

And hopefully, for Clark’s fans, she can eclipse Reese with the ticket prices by performing exceptionally well in the second half of the WNBA. However, when it comes to Reese’s fans, they would have breathed a sigh of relief after seeing their star overshadow Clark in one major aspect. But, who do you think will win this battle?
