Is the Reese-Clark rivalry the most exciting thing to happen in women's basketball since Parker's era?

If you’ve heard about the WNBA, you’re probably aware of the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. While Clark has taken the league by storm with her assists and three-pointers, Reese is doing magic with her rebounds and double-doubles. Hence, both of the athletes are top contenders to win the Rookie of the Year award this season. If that wasn’t enough, the Indiana Fever matchups against the Chicago Sky have garnered the teams, unprecedented attention which has only amplified with the two rookies fighting it out sometimes even literally on the court. Okay, it was just a nudge.

But now, the two have joined forces together to emulate a feat that was last done 16 years ago in the W by Candace Parker and Alexis Hornbuckle during the 2008 season. Let us have a look at it.

Reese and Clark are absolutely unstoppable. While Reese leads in rebounds with 12.9 boards per game, Clark leads in assists with 8.3 assists per game. Therefore, the W rookies together lead in 2 of the 5 main stat categories. This was a feat that was achieved in 2008 by Parker and Hornbuckle who ranked among the top players in 2 of the 5 main categories.

Parker was drafted as the first overall pick during the 2008 season by the Los Angeles Sparks whereas Hornbuckle was the fourth overall pick by the Detroit Shock. Both of them went on to show exceptional gameplay. While Parker led in rebounds with 9.5 rebounds per game, Hornbuckle led in steals with 2.3 steals per game. The result?

An exciting WNBA season pursued with the Detroit-based franchise emerging as the ultimate champions powered by Hornbuckle’s on-court brilliance. On the other hand, the Sparks ended their season as the Western Conference runner-ups. Both of them, thus, etched their name in the history books as Parker became the first W rookie to win both MVP and ROTY, a feat that hasn’t been repeated ever. But, can Reese and Clark emulate other achievements by Parker/Hornbuckle?

Where do Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark stand right now?

What’s your perspective on:

Is the Reese-Clark rivalry the most exciting thing to happen in women's basketball since Parker's era?

Have an interesting take?

Though Clark is being considered by some as a candidate for the MVP, it is unlikely that she will be able to bag both titles – considering Reese was ranked atop the ROTY race by ESPN. Nonetheless, the two can continue to break records. What comes as a cheerful instance for fans is that Clark became the first rookie in the W season to accomplish a triple-double.

Plus, she holds the record for W’s most assists in a single game (19) which she dished out against the Dallas Wings in July. Then she hit the most three-pointers by a WNBA rookie in a single season while simultaneously breaking Ticha Penicheiro’s most WNBA assists in a season. But, if Clark has done so much, how could Reese be behind?

Reese brushed shoulders with Parker before this season when she hit 15 consecutive double-doubles breaking the latter’s record of 12. Then while Parker has 9.5 rebounds per game, Reese has 12.9 and if she continues at this pace, she will surely keep her head ahead of Parker. She outsmarted Tina Charles for the most double-double record in a season by a rookie when she dropped her 23rd against the Indiana Fever on Friday.

And now, the two rookies have joined hands to get done with another rare feat. Hopefully, going by their on-song performances, the duo will be able to accomplish what they have set out to do. However, it will be interesting to see who ultimately takes home the ROTY award.
