Las Vegas Aces face lawsuit

The Las Vegas Aces are now tangled in a legal mess after former player Dearica Hamby filed a federal lawsuit against them on Monday. Hamby’s lawsuit accuses the team of discrimination and retaliation, culminating in her trade in January 2023, allegedly due to her pregnancy. She also accused the WNBA of failing to address her complaints.
In September 2023, Hamby filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The WNBA then launched its own investigation, which led to a suspension for Aces coach Becky Hammon for the first two games of the 2023 season due to violations of the league’s ‘Respect in the Workplace’ policies. Moreover, the Aces faced a penalty of losing their first-round pick in 2025 for breaching rules regarding impermissible benefits related to Hamby’s contract.
The new lawsuit reveals additional details about Hamby’s claims. It states that after the Aces signed Hamby to a two-year extension in June 2022, they provided extra benefits like housing and donations for her daughter’s school. However, following her pregnancy announcement, Hamby alleges the team treated her differently, including evicting her from team housing and ignoring her tuition coverage requests.
“We are aware of today’s legal filing and are reviewing the complaint,” a WNBA spokesperson informed News 3. As the WNBA prepares for its return, A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces face both excitement and challenges — split between court battles and a crucial season ahead.
